Best Stops to See on the Road to Hana on Maui

Best Stops to See on the Road to Hana on Maui

When traveling with my husband, we try to do and see as much as possible in a new destination. With only six days to explore Maui and knowing how much there is we wanted to see on this beautiful island, we knew we had to make the most of our time there. When I asked around about what to do on Maui, everyone said we had to do The Road to Hana. Most people are able to do this drive in one day, but knowing my husband and how long he can take shooting with his camera while exploring new places, I knew I had to plan for two days on the Road to Hana. Lucky for me, this meant that we got to stay at Travaasa, one of my dream hotels, located in Hana!

Planning out our trip, we decided to fly into Maui late on our first night, rent an AirBnb in Paia (right near the start of the Road to Hana on Maui), and get a fresh start on the Road to Hana first thing in the morning.

Here are all all stops you need to make along your journey on the Road to Hana on Maui!

*Side Note* I don’t normally get car sick, but these windy roads did make my stomach a little queasy. Luckily, there are plenty of stops along the way where my stomach got a break from the car. Just be prepared if you are someone who gets car sick! But don’t let this deter you from going. It is definitely worth it!

Stop 1: Fuel up at Colleen’s at the Cannery

We woke up early to start our drive along the Road to Hana. We decided to fuel up at Colleen’s at the Cannery in Haiku, a restaurant I read many raving reviews about. It was so good, I forgot to take a photo of my food to share before I devoured it all, so here is a photo of the outside! Colleen’s opens at 6am every day, so no matter how early you want to start on your Road to Hana journey, Colleen’s will be ready for you!

Stop 2: Hike Twin Falls

The Twin Falls area has a few easy hikes to explore. This first photo is a trail that leads past Twin Falls to the river upstream. We hit this spot right at the perfect time to see beautiful sunlight streaming through. These short hikes are not strenuous and are easy for everyone from little kids to grandparents. I enjoyed that this first “hike” was easy, considering my stomach was still very full from the delicious breakfast at Colleen’s!

Here is a photo of the actual Twin Falls, just a short walk from the parking area.

Stop 3: Eat at a Food Stand

We didn’t stop at a food stand since we were still so full from Colleen’s Restaurant, but I read wonderful things about this food stand at Huelo Lookout (another great stop). If you are hungry or thirsty, make sure to stop and grab some fresh fruit and smoothies to fuel you for the rest of the drive.

Stop 4: Walk Around Keanae Peninsula

I was really excited for this stop along the Road to Hana because of the history. When you enter Keanae Peninsula, you pass by a stone church that was built in 1856. A large tsunami hit this village in 1946, killing 24 people. The waves topped 45 feet and crashed into the village with no warning. The church was the only remaining building after the tsunami hit. Due to the tragedy of this tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center was created, which now sends out tsunami warnings for all of the Pacific Ocean. With such a beautiful stop, it was sad to think about the village and lives that used to be here.

Even without a tsunami, you can see how rough the waves are crashing into the edge of this peninsula.

Stop 5: Waikani Falls

This is a quick stop you will miss if you aren’t keeping an eye out. As you cross a bridge, this waterfall is right off to your side. It’s a quick pull off to view. It’s definitely worth a stop simply because it’s so easy to see!

Stop 6: Visit Black Sand Beach

Black Sand Beach at Wai’ anapanapa State Park is a beautiful place to stop and see. Oh, and there are bathrooms! We got to this spot late afternoon and the beach was packed with people. Unfortunately, most of the beach is pretty rocky and only a little bit is sand. If you want to lounge on the beach, I’d recommend getting here earlier in the day to get a good sandy spot.

If you are a camper, this is also a great spot to stop and camp for the night.

Stop 7: Rest in Hana at Travaasa

Entrance to Travaasa Hotel in Hana

I wish we could have stayed here longer, and I hope one day we will be back. But man, if you can spend at least one night at Travaasa, please do! I will be writing a blog post soon highlighting the hotel and all it has to offer. In the meantime, this pool was one of my favorite spots to relax.

Infinity swimming pool overlooking the ocean at Travaasa Hotel

We also got to see a beautiful rainbow after our morning yoga class! Talk about perfection.

Rainbow with palm trees at Travaasa Hotel

After a night of relaxation at Travaasa, head to your next stop. Normally people turn around and head back once they hit Hana, but I recommend taking the south side back to the main part of Maui. I personally loved this half of the Road to Hana much more than the first half.

Stop 8: Relax at Hamoa Beach

After a morning of yoga, meditation, beautiful rainbows, and a delicious breakfast at Travaasa, we headed on our way to finish up the drive on the Road to Hana. Our first stop was at Hamoa Beach. This beach is consistently rated one of the top beaches on Maui. I can definitely see why. If we could have stayed at Travaasa another night, I would have been sitting on this beach for an entire day! I’m a beach girl, if you can’t tell!

Hamoa Beach in Maui

Stop 9: Hike the Pipiwai Trail inside Haleakalā National Park

Our next stop, and where we spent most of the day, was the Pipiwai Trail. If you want to be memorized by the views and the sounds of walking through a  bamboo forest, make sure to hike the Pipiwai trail. When we were there, we were one of the few people hiking. It was an odd combination of peacefulness and eeriness. When walking through the bamboo forest portion of the hike, it was nearly silent. Then the wind would pick up and the bamboo would bounce against each other making hollow wind chime sounds. It is hard to explain. You will just have to experience it on your own! The hike is 1.8 miles one way and leads to to he hike leads to Waimoku Falls.

Waimoku Falls at the end of the Pipiwai Trail

After your last stop at Haleakala National Park, continue the drive on the backside of Haleakela. It honestly looks like the hillsides of Ireland.

A town in the Cinque Terre of Italy overlooking the water. Work with a travel agent for international travel

When You Should Work with a Travel Agent

If you’re wondering, yes, travel agents do still exist (I’m one of them)! Your next question may be, “When should I work with a travel agent?” That is a very good question because not every trip is worth booking with a travel agent. For example, if you are only booking domestic flights, it’s best to book those on your own. (For tips on basic economy versus economy plane tickets, click here.)

When to Work with a Travel Agent

When to Work with a Travel Agent

When to Work With a Travel Agent

But if you are looking to take one of the following types of vacations, you should work with a travel agent!

1. International Travel

Traveling internationally can get complicated quickly. It can be hard to keep track of passport information, currency, transportation, time zones, customs, and more. With all the factors that go into international travel, it’s a good idea to work with a travel expert. Travel agents know the in’s and out’s of international travel. I know tricks for getting through customs quicker, the most efficient way to travel throughout Italy, which countries you need to exchange currency versus countries that accept the USD, and so much more. Working with a travel agent for international travel can ease stress and let you focus on enjoying your trip!

A town in the Cinque Terre of Italy overlooking the water. Work with a travel agent for international travel

2. Family Vacations

It is hard enough to remember to pack all the things for the kids and yourself, you shouldn’t have to also worry about planning your entire family vacation. Working with a travel agent for your next family vacation gives you the change to actually enjoy the vacation! Travel agents know which destinations are family friendly. I know the destinations that will keep kids entertained the entire time, that welcome kids while allowing parents alone adult time, and will keep your kids talking about the family vacation for years to come. Family vacations shouldn’t be stressful, they should be enjoyable, and working with a travel agent can help guarantee that.

3. Destination Wedding

You may not think about working with a travel agent for your destination wedding, but you should! Travel agents work with couples to find the best destination location. We take into consideration your wedding wishes, group size, and more to find the best destination. With so many locations to choose from, it’s a good idea to ask an expert for help. Once you book a location, the couple works with the onsite wedding coordinator to plan the big day and the travel agent works with the couple’s guests for travel and accommodations. That way, the couple is not inundated with questions from all their guests on travel arrangements. The travel agent is there to coordinate all the travel so the couple gets to focus on the joy of their big day. Make sure to consult with a travel agent when booking your destination wedding!

4. Honeymoon

Your honeymoon is arguably one of your biggest and most anticipated vacations. Whether you go big and go on your biggest trip yet or go small, I cannot stress enough that you should work with a travel agent on your honeymoon. Your honeymoon should be your dream vacation with your new spouse. With how much effort and time it takes to plan a wedding, sometimes the honeymoon can get pushed to the back burner. Don’t let that happen! As a travel agent, your honeymoon is my top priority. Making sure you have nothing to worry about but focusing on relaxing or adventuring with your new spouse is what I’m here for! You will not regret working with a travel agent for your honeymoon!

The Maldives- Palm trees, the beach, blue ocean water, and over the water bungalows. Work with a travel agent for your honeymoon.

5. Group Travel

Trying to wrangle a large group of friends, a family for a reunion, or employees for a sales incentive trip or retreat can seem impossible when tackling it on your own. That is where travel agents come into play. I know which companies and destinations have great deals on travel groups. As a travel agent, I work with each individual traveler to make sure their travel accommodations are taken care of. When one traveler’s flight is delayed, I take care of figuring out a new route. Group travel is successful when there is one point person in charge. The travel agent can take on that responsibility to make sure no one has to worry about their travel. Enjoy your vacation!

6. Theme Park Vacations

Have you ever tried to book a trip to Disney World and given up by the high prices and amount of options to choose from? How do you know if what you’re buying is going to be worth the price? A trip to Disney is not a cheap vacation, so you want to know you are getting your money’s worth!

That is just one example of when to work with a travel agent for theme park vacations. Theme parks have many ticket options to choose from. When going to Disney, you also have options for dining plans, specialty dining you need to book in advance, hotels on resort and off resort, transportation, special photography, and so much more. It can get incredibly overwhelming. The great thing, though, is travel agents live in this world day to day. We know the ins and outs of theme parks. I get daily updates on what’s going on at Disney from new resorts opening to construction to special deals. It’s not your job to know every detail about these theme parks, it’s my job! Do yourself a favor and consult with a travel agent the next time you want to go somewhere like Disney. You will know for sure you are getting exactly what you want!

Walt Disney World - Magic Kingdom Cinderella's Castle lit up at night with the Mickey and Walt statue in front. Work with a travel agent for your Disney vacation.

7. Cruises

There are so many different types of cruises from river cruises to ocean cruises to around-the-world cruises. There are different types of cruise rates, room types, and inclusions. Different cruise itineraries cater to different age groups and interests. It is very hard to keep it all straight and truly know what you are getting into when booking online. Working with a travel agent for your next cruise will help you know exactly the type of vacation you are walking into. I have taken trainings on different types of cruise lines, cruise itineraries, and all that is included. If I don’t know off hand the answer to your cruise question, I know exactly who to ask or where to find the answer. Save the headache the next time you want to cruise and contact a travel agent to help!

If you are interested in taking any of the vacations above, please reach out to me at hello@thekeystotravel.com. As a travel agent, I am here to help you travel more and stress less!

A Perfect Day in Seattle for Couples

There is a lot you can do in Seattle for a day! My husband and I spent the weekend in Olympic National Park and decided to spend a day in Seattle before flying back to Denver. My list was, of course, way too long to fit into one day. So I narrowed it down to five essentials. A little bit of beer, food, art, and touristy sites!

A Perfect Day in Seattle for Couples

A Perfect Day in Seattle for Couples
A Perfect Day in Seattle for Couples

Pike Place Market

You can’t go to Seattle and not walk around the long halls of the public market, Pike Place Market. We stumbled upon a store that has years upon years of old magazines and newspapers. It was fun to flip through and see all the headlines year after year. There are also rows and rows and rows of tulip and flower shops! If we weren’t flying home the next day, I would have bought a bundle! And finally, if you get lucky, you can see the iconic fish throwers whipping their catch around the store.

Eat (and drink) at Old Stove Brewing

Drinking beer at Old Stove in Seattle, Washington

Head around the back side of Pike Place Market and find Old Stave Brewery. It is right on the water and has beautiful views of the city! The food and beer is delicious, definitely what you deserve from walking around the market for awhile.

Chihuly Garden and Glass

After your stomachs are satisfied, make your way to Chihuly Garden and Glass. We got tickets here in advance that included entrance to the Chihuly Garden and Glass and a ride to the top of the Space Needle that is right next door.

I am obsessed with blown glass. It’s my favorite souvenir to purchase… so far in Hawaii, Italy, and now Seattle. Walking through an entire museum of incredible blown glass work blew my mind. I also really wanted to touch each piece but held back! These artists in my opinion are magicians, and it was a special treat to be able to see so many beautiful pieces of blown glass all in one space.

Space Needle

I could have spent all day at the Chihuly Garden and Glass, but we had tickets to the Space Needle, so next door we went!

Normally, I am not afraid of heights, but it was a bit trippy at the top of the Space Needle! I can’t believe that when they built this, none of the workers were wearing harnesses or protective gear to keep them from falling 80 feet to their death. Miraculously, no one was injured during the construction of the Space Needle! It was insane to see the progress photos and the men just hanging out at the top of the needle doing work with no harnesses.

The view from the top is amazing, but be forewarned if you are afraid of heights!

Views of Downtown Seattle from the top of the Space Needle

Optimism Brewery

And finally, end your night with a drink or two at Optimism Brewery. The atmosphere is really fun with outdoor space for games and the beer is delicious. It’s hard to not end your day in Seattle on a high note with cute glasses like this! Oh and don’t worry about tipping- they pay their employees fairl here :)

Staying at Paradisus Los Cabos an All-Inclusive Getaway

After weeks of non-stop pressure from work and life, my two girlfriends and I desperately needed an all-inclusive getaway. Within a few days of talking about a girls weekend, we had this trip booked. That’s just how bad we all needed it! My requirement was an all-inclusive resort in Cabo. My friends’ requirement was amazing food. We quickly narrowed in on Paradisus Los Cabos, and to really make it a ‘Treat Yo Self’ weekend, we splurged for the Adults-Only Royal Service with a butler. We booked our trip and were all ready for five days of relaxation, delicious food, and girl talk!

Three girlfriends in white tops at Paradisus Los Cabos all-inclusive getaway

Paradisus Los Cabos is an all-inclusive getaway resort in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico right on the coast of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. Something unique about this resort is the family section and adults-only section. There are separate check-ins for both these room categories and a third check-in area for the rest of the guests. It really makes the check-in process go quickly and smoothly.

Hotel Rooms

The rooms are spacious and very comfortable at Paradisus Los Cabos. My two girlfriends and I stayed in a Royal Service Ocean View Suite with two queen beds. There was plenty of room for all of us and our stuff! And we had a beautiful view of the pool and ocean. This is the adults-only side of the resort, so we didn’t have to worry about crying kids in the middle of the night.

In the adults only part of the resort, there are swim-up suite room options. These rooms have a king bed and a large hydromassage tub inside the room, perfect for a honeymoon couple!

Food

My two friends wanted delicious food and they certainly got it! I cannot rave enough about the food at Paradisus Los Cabos and neither could they!

There are seven different restaurants at Paradisus Los Cabos:

  • Naos is a breakfast buffet with plenty of food options to choose from.
  • Bana is Asian fusion. We loved the sushi so much we got it multiple times and had fun at Teppanyaki one night.

Teppanyaki spelling out I love you at an all-inclusive getaway
  • Mole is the Mexican restaurant. You can order whatever you want on the menu, but our waiter asked us our meal preferences (I am vegetarian) and brought out the best options for us. It was great to be surprised and all the food was authentic and amazing. Make sure to get the churros!! And bring some back for me. :)
Churros with chocolate sauce
  • Terraza & Market Grill is an Italian steakhouse
  • La Palapa is next to the adults-only pool and is only for the Royal Service guests. You can get pool side dining from the restaurant or go sit in the restaurant to eat. Make sure to get the shrimp!! It was so good we got it almost every time we went to the pool!
Poolside food on your all-inclusive getaway
  • Gastro Bar by Martin Berasategui is the only restaurant that is an extra charge and the attire is very fancy.
  • Gabi Beach overlooks the ocean and beach and is open pretty much all day
  • Royal Service Lounge Bar has food and drinks and is only for the Royal Service guests. Their breakfast smoothies are really refreshing on a hot morning!

The food is really worth the hype at Paradisus Los Cabos. They always ask if you have any food allergies or restrictions in order to provide you the best dining experience during your stay.

Swimming Pools

There are two swimming pools at Paradisus Los Cabos, well technically three if you count the swim-up suites! The main one is for all guests. It is large enough that it never feels crowded. It has a swim-up bar and a zero entry making it easy for kids (and adults!) to get in and out.

The second pool is adults only and for Royal Service guests. I personally liked the main pool better because there is so much seating that it feels like you have your own little corner of paradise. It is also entertaining to watch the pool aerobics class happening in the middle of the day! For being a family friendly resort, there weren’t many kids around. We were there in the middle of May, so I’m not sure what the resort will feel like when kids are out of school. It was nice to have the option to go to the adults-only side if we wanted.

Beach

The beach right next to Paradisus Los Cabos is HUGE. It is more of a rocky sand than smooth sand, though. There is a roped off section of the beach for Paradisus Los Cabos guests with towels, lounge chairs, umbrellas, and beach side food and drink service. There is a roped off section in the ocean that is technically swimmable, but the waves were so rough I didn’t want to go in any farther than dipping my toes. I would be nervous to have kids swimming in it.

Family-Friendly

Along with having an adults-only section of the resort, Paradisus Los Cabos is very family friendly. There is a section of the hotel that is meant for families. These rooms have backpacks with beach toys for the kids. At night, you can request milk, cookies and a bedtime story from your family concierge specialist. There is free group babysitting so the parents can have time to themselves. AND while we were at Paradisus Los Cabos, we joined in on a movie showing of Moana with popcorn blankets and pillows.

Poolside dusk movie showing of Moana at an all-inclusive getaway

Activities

We spent five days at Paradisus Los Cabos without leaving the resort and did not get bored once on our all-inclusive getaway weekend! There are plenty of daily activities to do along with plenty of relaxation options. We got a good laugh out of watching the pool time aerobics class (which I should have joined). We got up early one day and participated in a yoga class overlooking the beautiful ocean. One afternoon we took a wine tasting class. It was really fun to learn more about the wine they serve at Paradisus and different notes and flavors to pick up in the wines.

If you are a Royal Service guest, you are able to use the spa’s hydrotherapy pool without booking a spa treatment. We definitely spent time here!

Hydrotherapy pool with jets running at the all-inclusive getaway

If you want to just spend a weekend relaxing at an all-inclusive getaway, you can do that at Paradisus Los Cabos. It’s also very easy to go explore Cabo and do excursions, we just didn’t want to do that on this trip!

A Perfect All-Inclusive Getaway

With the different sections of the resort, Paradisus Los Cabos is a perfect all-inclusive getaway for everyone including families, friends, couples, weddings, honeymoons, and a girls weekend.

FAQs about Paradisus Los Cabos

Do I need to bring my own beach towel?

No! There are towels on every beach and pool chair and extras spread throughout the resort. There is no need to pack extra towels. Save that suitcase room.

When is the best time to visit?

August and September are incredibly hot and it is also hurricane season. If you want the best rates, this may be the best time to go, but the weather will not be ideal. Cabo barely gets any rain and stays relatively warm throughout the year, so visiting year round is a good idea!

Whale season is November through April. During this time you will see Humpback Whales coming down for the winter and then in  spring going back up to Alaska for the summer. You can see whales from the resort itself or take a boat tour to see them up close.

Do I have to tip?

That is completely up to you. I recommend tipping $1-$3 per bag for bellmen, $1 per drink for the bartender, and $1-$3 per person at a meal. If you do get a butler, it is recommended to tip. You can tip each day, or do one large tip at the end of your stay. If you tip at the end of your stay, I recommend tipping $20-$30 per person.

Is there a swimmable beach?

Technically, there is an area of the ocean that is swimmable. It is roped off, so you know where to stay to be safe. When we were there, the water was pretty rough, and I wouldn’t recommend letting children swim in the water.

Can we drink the water?

Do not drink water out of the tap in Mexico. There are water stations throughout the grounds at Paradisus Los Cabos and this is with filtered, clean water. When drinking water at the restaurants, they provide you with filtered, safe water. When in your room, drink water out of the provided water bottles. To be extra careful, brush your teeth with bottled water, too.

Are there activities to do on the resort?

Yes! We did not leave the resort for five days and had plenty to do.

Is the Royal Service worth it?

Yes! I believe the Royal Service is worth it. They treat you well no matter what level of guest you are a Paradisus Los Cabos, but if you want that extra special treatment where you don’t have to worry about anything, Royal Service is where it’s at.

How environmentally friendly is Paradisus Los Cabos

Paradisus Los Cabos is striving to be as environmentally friendly as possible. They have linen napkins and no straws. The resort is trying to get rid of water bottles with water stations throughout the property. They still need to find a way to provide safe drinking water in the rooms without having water bottles. Finally, Paradisus Los Cabos has started to  grow their own produce onsite!

Can you get married at Paradisus Los Cabos?

Yes!  You can get married on the beach or on the pavilion overlooking the ocean.

Tips for Visiting Savannah

Tips for Visiting Savannah

Tips for Visiting Savannah
Tips for Visiting Savannah

Savannah, Georgia has become one of my favorite cities USA. It is beautiful and romantic, has an unbelievable history, and is exciting to explore. Here are my top tips for visiting Savannah, Georgia.

When to Visit Savannah

Summer in Savannah is incredibly hot and humid. August is the rainiest month along with the second hottest month (July being the hottest month). In July and August, prices for activities and hotels are pretty reasonable because most people are heading to the beach to get a break from the Southern summer heat.

Winter in Savannah is “cold”, and by cold I mean in the mid-60s and not humid, which is perfect for some people. Temperatures can get close to freezing, though, so be prepared if you run into some icy, cold conditions. Prices of hotel rooms are significantly lower than the summer.

Fall and Spring is a great time to visit Savannah. The temperatures are mild, room rates are reasonable, and it isn’t too crowded with most kids being in school. During spring time you can see plenty of blooming flowers all over the city.

If you want to avoid the crowds, heat, humidity, and high prices, my suggestion is visiting Savannah in late October through March.

What to Do in Savannah

Visit Jones Street

You can’t visit Savannah without seeing one of the prettiest streets in America. Yes, Jones Street has officially been named one of the most beautiful streets and for good reason!

Homes on Jones Street in Savannah

Located in the heart of the Historic District of Savannah, most of the homes were built in the mid-1800s on Jones Street. The extra wide street and sidewalks are paved with brick. The trees lining the street have hanging moss, which makes it a very romantic and peaceful location. Make sure to take a leisurely stroll down the brick paved sidewalk and dream of a life in one of these homes!

Enjoy One (or all) of the Historic Squares

Savannah has 22 historic squares spread throughout the Historic District. The first squares were designed in 1733! These mini parks are a great break among all the historic homes and buildings. They provide shade and a comfy place to sit and read (and possibly visit with some ghosts).

Do a Haunted Pub Crawl

Savannah is one of the most haunted cities in the country… or so they say! Whether or not you believe in ghosts, doing a haunted tour or haunted pub crawl is a great way to learn the history of Savannah. On most of these tours, you walk around the Historic District of Savannah with a tour guide sharing stories of the most haunted squares, homes, and buildings. And of course, you end at a cemetery!

Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia

Get Lost in a Book at The Book Lady Bookstore

If you are a book nerd like me, finding a good bookstore is like visiting the candy store. The Book Lady Bookstore is Savannah’s only full service independent bookstore. They have all types of books, including brand new, slightly used, out of print, and rare finds. I can guarantee you will find some hidden gems in this tucked away oasis.

Stroll Around Forsyth Park

When visiting Savannah, Forsyth Park is a must-stop. It is one of Savannah’s most well-known and largest parks. It’s iconic feature, the Forsyth Fountain, is at the north end of the park. There is almost always an event going on, and you can often see a wedding group taking photos near the fountain.

Walk Savannah’s River Street

River Street is supposedly one of the most haunted areas in Savannah. If you are willing to battle the ghosts, River Street is a great area to explore at night. There are pubs and restaurants up and down the river. One of my favorites is Kevin Barry’s Irish Pub. They have live Irish music each night. With a glass of Guinness, it almost felt like we were back in Ireland!

Where to Eat and Drink in Savannah

Brunch at Clary’s Cafe

Visiting Savannah without stopping at Clary’s Cafe is not an option. Clary’s Cafe is a classic cafe with a basic menu, but the food is so good I’ve eaten there multiple times! Oh, and they serve breakfast all day!

Visit the Olde Pink House

Fun Fact: The Olde Pink House hasn’t always been pink! In 1771, the mansion was built with bricks and covered in white stucco. Over time, the red of the brick faded through the white of the stucco to give The Olde Pink House it’s pink hue!

The Olde Pink House is now a restaurant, but be careful of the ghosts that are said to roam the halls!

Drink and Walk Around Town

One of the many wonderful things about Savannah is the open-container law. This means you can take your drink to-go and explore Savannah with a drink in hand. Make sure to head to Wet Willies to get your frozen alcoholic drink to-go!

Where to Stay in Savannah

There are plenty of places to choose from when looking for a place to stay in Savannah. We chose to stay near Forsyth Park so we had easy access to all the hot spots in the Historic District. One great thing about Savannah is their free trolly system. The dot connects you (for free!) all around Downtown and the Historic District. They even have a free water ferry shuttle! This free shuttle system makes it very easy to find affordable lodging and get to where you want to go around Savannah.

Day Trips from Savannah

If you have extra time when visiting Savannah, make sure to check out these four place just a quick drive away.

Wormsloe Historic Site

You may have already seen photos of Wormsloe Historic Site without even knowing what it was! The iconic road surrounded by rows of live oaks is what I am talking about.

Wormsloe Plantation drive with trees

This estate is only 15 minutes from Savannah. There is a lot more to this Historic Site than the beautiful tree-lined road, though. It holds the ruins of the oldest standing structure in Savannah, built in 1745. Head there yourself to see this beautiful estate!

Savannah National Wildlife Refuge

When I was in Savannah with my family, we got the chance to go on a kayak tour with Savannah Coastal Ecotours in the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. Kathryn and Fran helped us navigate the marsh and educated us along the way. I would highly recommend Savannah Coastal Ecotours for water excursions in and around Savannah. We didn’t see any alligators, but maybe you will!

Tybee Island

Tybee Island, also known as Savannah’s Beach, is the closest beach to Savannah. It is only about a 20 minute drive from the city, but is worth the drive, especially on a hot, humid summer’s day. If you want tips on what to do on Tybee Island, head to my friend Bree Pair’s blog. She created a really great Travel Guide to Tybee Island!

The Crab Shack

On the way back from Tybee Island, make sure to stop at The Crab Shack. It has a really laid back, beach feel with delicious seafood.

When you sit outside, the tables have a hole and trash can in the middle where you can throw the shells of your discarded seafood for convenience. Make sure to have a Captain Crab’s Sampler Platter for me!

Basic Economy vs. Economy Airline Tickets

View of the clouds from an airplane window

Recently, the majority of US airlines have introduced a new airline ticket class called ‘Basic Economy’. What does this mean and why should you be aware of it? Sometimes searching for airline tickets on sites like Kayak and Expedia provide you with the cheapest ticket option. If you purchase a ‘Basic Economy’ ticket without knowing all the rules, you could run into problems at the airport.

Each airline’s rules are a bit different, but all Basic Economy tickets have restrictions on carry-on baggage, upgrades, changes and boarding order, most likely boarding last and possibly at the back of the plane.

Below are the specific rules on Basic Economy for some of the major US airlines. Don’t worry- if you book Southwest, you have nothing to worry about. They truly live their brand promise of “Low Fares. Nothing to Hide. That’s Transfarency,” and I don’t see them jumping on board this ‘Basic Economy’ train any time soon.

Alaskan

  • Called ‘Saver Fares’
  • Limited seat selection or assigned at check-in
  • Last to board the plane
  • Carry-on luggage allowed, but last to get overhead bin access
  • Flight changes not allowed
  • May upgrade seat class for purchase if available day of travel
  • Cannot guarantee groups of two or more will sit next to each other

American

  • You can choose your seat for a fee 48 hours prior flight, otherwise will be assigned for free at check-in
  • Carry-ons allowed
  • Board the plane last

Delta

  • Seat assigned after check-in; sometimes allowed to purchase seat 48 hours before check-in
  • Ticket changes or refunds are not allowed
  • Carry-ons are allowed and they will be gate checked for free if flight is full when you board
  • Board the plane last

Frontier

By default Frontier is Basic Economy. This means that you have to pay money to pick a seat and to pay check or carry on a bag.

United

  • A seat is assigned at check-in and cannot be changed
  • Upgrades are not available
  • Groups/families will not be sitting by each other
  • For domestic flights, only a personal item is allowed. Carry-ons are not allowed
  • Flight changes and refunds are not allowed
  • Last to board the plane

I have found that Basic Economy is great for:

  • Solo travelers
  • Travelers packing light with only a personal item, like a backpack
  • Flexible travelers looking to get from Point A to Point B for the cheapest price with little to no perks

Have you flown with a Basic Economy ticket? What was your experience?

La Unica Pool at UNICO

UNICO All-Inclusive Hotel

Swim-Up Suites at UNICO an all-inclusive hotel

As a travel advisor, I have toured quite a few all-inclusive resorts. I am always looking for something unique to share or a ‘wow’ factor that gives travelers a reason to visit. UNICO 20*87* is the resort to visit if you are looking for unique and authentic. Before I visited this resort, I followed their Instagram account closely. It’s hard to not want to visit with a feed as beautiful as theirs. Whether you are a couple looking for a romantic honeymoon destination or a group of friends wanting a girl’s getaway, UNICO offers a unique adults-only, all-inclusive retreat unlike anything else I have seen.

Design

The meaning behind the design aesthetic at UNICO is based on local, cultural immersion. UNICO takes hints from the local Riviera Maya community and implements them into the resort with major design details like the entryway lobby (below) all the way to small details like local artists’ work on the walls.

Rooms

There are multiple room options and sizes at UNICO. The one below is the traditional Alcoba Ocean View room, which has the option of a king size bed or two queens. These rooms are very spacious, and I never felt tight on space while sharing a room with a friend.

The rooms below are swim-up suite rooms. These rooms have direct access to your own private pool area!

All rooms without a swim-up pool include a hydro spa tub on the balcony that your local host can prep for you.

With the slippers, robe and hat UNICO provides in each room, I could have relaxed on my balcony all day long.

Food

The food is delicious at UNICO. They take local inspiration and use it in all their restaurants and bars. There are five restaurants, three bars, and in-room dining.

The in-room dining options are endless. You can get breakfast, lunch, dinner and even late night snacks. With room service this good, I had to order it a couple of times!

At the 20*87* Restaurant you can even get a mini ice-cream truck for the table! How cute is that?

Pools

There are three different pools at UNICO, one for whatever type of mood you are in.

  1. La Unica Pool’s atmosphere is a mix between relax and party. In the morning you can do water yoga and then relax with a drink in hand all afternoon.

2. 20*87* Pool is the party pool. There is a swim-up bar, a blow-up
volleyball net and a live DJ. If you want the party vibe, head to the
20*87* pool.

3. La Escondida Pool is for those who want to relax and enjoy some quiet
time. There is peaceful music playing and always a very chill vibe.

La Escondida Pool at UNICO. The quiet, relaxing pool.

Sometimes at all-inclusive resorts you have to wake up before the sun to claim your spot at the pool. I did not feel this was the case at UNICO. There is plenty of seating options around every pool, so even if I didn’t show up to the pool until mid-afternoon, I could still find a comfy chair to relax in.

Activities

There is always something going on at UNICO. If you like to have something to do all day and night on vacation, UNICO has it all. There is a UNICO app you can download on your phone that has the full schedule of activities. There is an activity for everyone from fitness classes to tequila tasting classes to live music and salsa lessons.

Volunteer

Another aspect of UNICO I love is their “Vacation for a Cause” program. It is a very simple volunteer program. They provide a list of needed items on their website and all you have to do is bring those items to UNICO when you visit. The staff then brings the donations to local non-profit organizations in their community. I don’t have children yet, so it was fun to shop for some coloring supplies to donate! See what types of things you can bring to donate when you visit UNICO here.

Top 10 Things To Do on Oahu

So you’re heading to Oahu, Hawaii, but you’re not sure what you should do or things that shouldn’t be missed? Here are my top ten recommendations on what to do when traveling to the Island of Oahu!

1. Watch the Sunrise

Inevitably, you will have jet lag waking up the first morning in Oahu if you are flying in from the mainland. When you wake up before the sun, head over to the East side of the island to watch the sunrise. Lanikai Beach is great for this.

Sunrise over the Island of Oahu, Hawaii.

2. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel & Mai Tai Bar

Check out The Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Built in 1927, this hotel has incredible history. It is truly beautiful inside and out… it will be a hard one to miss considering it is a light pink on the outside, sometimes nicknamed the Pink Palace. Outside just steps from Waikiki Beach, make sure to try out the Mai Tai Bar. There are so many different mai tais and taste delicious.

3. Cinnamon’s

Eat at Cinnamon’s in Kailua for breakfast. Their guava pancakes are award winning for a reason! Also, try their ginger tea, and let me know if you can find out the secret ingredient that makes this tea so delicious.

4. The North Shore

Drive to The North Shore along the Kamehameha Highway. It is one of the most scenic drives on Oahu and there are plenty of food trucks to pick from along the way. The famous Shrimp Shack was my favorite spot! The North Shore in winter has huge waves with well known surfer competitions, but in the summer the ocean is pretty calm and this is a good floating spot for you and your favorite floatie!

5. Honolulu Botanical Gardens

If you need a break from the beach and sun, head to one of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens. There are five gardens throughout the island, so plenty to choose from depending where you are staying. We went to Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden. There are so many tropical plant species to learn about and see with plenty of walking trails. Also- free admission!

6. Hanauma Bay

If you are interested in snorkeling, head to Hanauma Bay. It is a very popular snorkel spot, so get there early. They will close if they reach capacity. They provide snorkeling gear and a quick tutorial and safety 101, if you need it. Otherwise, you can head on down to the beach and start snorkeling!

Hanauma Bay from above, a great snorkeling spot in Oahu, Hawaii.

7. Waikiki Brewing Co.

Along the main drag in Waikiki is Waikiki Brewing Co. They have great beer and food and a fun atmosphere with plenty of seating indoors and out.

Beer at Waikiki Brewing Co in Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii.

8. Hike

Three of my favorite hikes were Kaena Point, Manoa Falls Trail, and Diamond Head. Kaena Point is super hot and dry, so make sure to bring plenty of water. Fun Fact – It is also the most Western point of Oahu.  For a hike where you are pretty much guaranteed to get wet, head to the center of the island for Manoa Falls Trail, You’re basically hiking through a rainforest, so bring a raincoat! Diamond Head is a touristy hike to do, but the views from the top are amazing. It is also very easy to get to if you are staying in Waikiki.

9. Luau

Experience an authentic Luau.  We went to Germaine’s Luau and had a blast. You will learn the history to the Hawaiian Luau, enjoy a traditional Hawaiian feast, and watch and maybe participate in an authentic luau.

10. Shave Ice

And a final classic Oahu tradition is eat all the shave ice you can! You can find shave ice stands pretty much everywhere you go. There are so many flavors you can mix, and they are especially refreshing when you get hot from being out in the tropical sun! Let me know what your favorite flavor is when you are back on the mainland!

Women in the Travel Industry

Happy International Women’s Day (March 8th)! There are many women in the travel industry making huge, positive impacts changing the way we travel, the way we think about travel and more. On this special day, I wanted to acknowledge just a few of these amazing women and share a bit about how they are making BIG differences in this world.

Leticia + Savannah with 109 World

What role did travel play for you in your younger days?

Leticia:

My parents always taught us to appreciate diversity, different cultures, traditions and beliefs. They would always say when I was little that there were so many invaluable lessons they couldn’t teach us. Only going out and witnessing this diversity in the world would we learn the most important lessons in life. So travel always played this role of being essential to our growth and development as humans. Because travel fosters compassion, awareness, understanding of one another, and allows us to gain perspective and clarity of our sense of place in the world.

Savannah:

Growing up, travel was always a source of adventure and learning for me. I am lucky to have gone on service trips throughout my childhood that sparked my passion for supporting grassroots organizations as well as my curiosity for people’s stories. I found that I learned the most valuable and memorable lessons while I was traveling. I am really grateful I had these opportunities when I was younger to see how important getting outside of your comfort zone is for self-growth.

What is 109 World and how did it come about?

109 World is a platform dedicated to help individuals fulfill the promise of their potential through self-love and love for the world. What does this mean? 109 designs and hosts experiences for individuals to participate and go through a programming rich in mindfulness and wellbeing, but also in giving back to the world. The goal is for each individual that takes part on a 109 experience to learn how reconnecting with their truly authentic selves through self-love is a powerful tool to transform their lives and the world for better. Once you feel good with yourself, it means you are best positioned to do good in the world, and our 109 experiences offer the space to do all of that.

Yoga circle with the sunrise in a tropical paradise.

The concept for 109 World came from our discomfort over how, despite today’s advancements and technology, a majority of the population still lives in either one side of the pendulum: either just taking care of themselves and practicing self love and not being of service to the world at all, or just giving back and not prioritizing their own health & wellbeing. Very few of us realize that a combination of both is important if we want to make the world a better place. Moreover, very few of us identify as change-makers of the world and our own lives, so our team at 109 realized this lack of empowerment was not only affecting people’s happiness & wellbeing in general, but also greatly hindering amazing initiatives from getting the necessary support they need in order to scale their impact. It’s an interesting contrast. The world today is more connected than ever, information and content is cost-free and knows no borders, and yet we (individuals, corporations and other organizations) remain unaware as to the influence and impact we can have. It is this paradox that drove us to give people the space and inspiration they need to start changing their lives and the world for better.

What is the mission of 109 World?

Our Mission is to help individuals fulfill the promise of their potential through mindfulness and giving back.

What are your roles with 109 World?

Leticia:

I am the Co-founder and Executive Director of 109 World. I make sure our strategic and operational objectives are aligned with our goals of helping individuals fulfill the promise of their potential through mindfulness and actionable impact.

Savannah:

I am the Associate Director with 109 World. My role consists of managing all elements of operation and logistics for each 109 experience, as well as relationships with the 109 community, especially as it pertains to past, current, and potential participants on a 109 trip.

In what ways can travelers get involved?

We would love to have them joining one or many of our experiences. Our trips are all so different from one another – we go to different countries every time, do different volunteer type of work and support different causes, have different mindfulness classes with different teachers and speakers for each trip. You will never get the same experience, even if you join every single 109 journey!

We have all the information about our upcoming trips on our website: www.109world.com/trips/ and we are very active on social media as well, especially instagram – where we not only share about our upcoming trips, but also about our local projects, partners, future trips, pop-up events we host and much more. We very often launch very cool campaigns promoting travel and offering the opportunity for travelers to join our trips for very little, like $2 dollars!  We are planning on launching the Travel for $2 campaign again this year, so stay tuned @109world!

Volunteers at the Turtle Sanctuary in Mexico.

What has been your favorite travel experience?

Leticia:

This is a hard question. But I think my favorite travel experiences were both with 109 when we went to Greece in 2017 and Mexico last year.

Mexico because we stayed at the most beautiful eco-hotel I have ever been. The place is called Playa Viva, a sustainable boutique hotel (with tree houses!) located on the western coast of Mexico nestled between the sparkling waters of the Pacific Ocean and the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains. This paradise is situated on a mile of pristine and private beach, with nearly 200 acres including an estuary, an Aztec archeological site, a turtle sanctuary, and a coastal forest and mangrove ecosystem which supports an array of stunning wildlife. If you haven’t heard about them, go check their instagram account @playaviva! Besides it being a very special and gorgeous place, to work with their turtle sanctuary was an unique experience for me, too. To wake up everyday releasing baby turtles and during the day building a new turtle sanctuary was more inspiring than I expected to be. To witness baby turtles being born with all the odds stacked against them, from crawling out of a hole for several days, to making their way towards the ocean with the tide constantly bringing them backwards – and then seeing them finally reach the water taught me so much about life, and that no matter what life throws at you to remember to just keep moving forward. We will get where we were meant to be eventually.

Greece was also my favorite because it was such a nourishing and transformative experience. The Greek culture is so warm, the way they prioritize time with family and friends is so beautiful to see and the food is absolutely delicious. The 109 Greece trip was particularly transformative for me because of the work we did there with building a school in a refugee camp. This cause really touched my heart in a different way. Not that the refugee crisis is worse than any other crisis, but personally it was hard for me to think we could treat people like that or even let it become what it became: more than 65 million people living as refugees worldwide, forcibly displaced. Doctors, engineers, lawyers, mothers, sons and daughters.  People like those you grew up with, people like those you love, people like you and me that now live in refugee camps with a life without digital resources and services, a life without income, without literacy skills and opportunities, and without the satisfaction that comes from feeling welcomed by society. That really impacted me. I felt that I left Greece, but my heart and mind stayed with them, with the reflections that this refugee crisis is everybody’s problem and each one of us has a personal responsibility to help. Because this is as much about the rescue of humanity and our values as it is about  the rescue of refugees and their lives.

Savannah:

I would have to say our last 109 retreat to Mexico is definitely top of my list. The eco-hotel we stayed at, Playa Viva, is a place unlike any other with being both a breathtaking location (treehouses, majestic sunsets, & baby turtle releases!), but also one that is sustainable and deeply committed to the local community. I loved this trip because from the second we arrived I felt like I was home even though I had never been there, as there is a true sense of community at Playa Viva, which is something I believe is vital to our success and happiness as humans. Plus, being able to learn more about ocean and marine life conservation while working on the turtle sanctuary was profoundly moving. Nothing substitutes experience, and it was an honor to have this chance to not only learn about the immense threats the turtles face just to survive, but also to get my hands dirty and learn what it takes to protect them. The day we left was truly heartbreaking for me as I did not want to leave our new friends or this special place, and it is now somewhere I consider a second home – I cannot wait to be back!

What is one destination you would recommend to everyone?

Leticia:

Anywhere in Greece. The landscapes with all the olive trees are magical, the paradisiac beaches that feels like you are in a movie, the delicious food they are so proud of and their culture and history – it’s birth of civilization and one of the best places on Earth in my opinion!

Savannah:

One place I would recommend everyone go is Barcelona! This city holds such a special place in my heart and is the perfect place to go with friends, your partner, or even solo. There is so much history, delicious tapas (patatas bravas are my favorite food on the whole planet), and you can feel how alive the city is everywhere you go. It will always be one of my favorite places and I cannot wait to be back there one day!

What is one piece of advice you would give a female looking to start her own business in the travel industry?

Leticia:

There is a quote that I love from Alan Cohen that describes it well: “Do not wait until the conditions are perfect to begin. Beginning makes the conditions perfect.” If you always wanted to start something, don’t wait longer to make it happen. Do what you can, with what you have, where you are!

Savannah:

Surround yourself with people you trust and value, and then go from there. Obstacles feel much less daunting when you know you have a team you are fully confident in and can rely on. You can’t predict how amazing things will go, or how hard they will be – but with the right people you will be equipped for it all.

Kristi + Brittany with Travel Savvi

What role did travel play in your lives growing up?

Kristi:

Growing up, my family always took vacations exploring the sites and history of the United States. In high school I took many solo trips to visit extended family and spent a summer on a mission trip to Egypt. After that, I realized how much more of the world there is to see, and I was hooked. I knew that somehow travel had to be a part of what I did for a career.

Brittany:

Travel came into my life for the first time when I was 16 years old when I walked into a local travel agency and applied for a job working as a receptionist. After being hired, I worked everyday after school for four hours and they were the BEST four hours of my day. I vividly remember spending hours organizing and ordering brochures and getting lost in the images of amazing destinations. This job would change my future as I never waived from my passion in life and future career from this point on.

Hard Rock Resorts

How did you meet one another and decide to start a travel agency together?

Kristi and I met working for the same company as independent contractors. We met at our very first annual conference and immediately hit it off and would spend many years traveling together, leaning on each other and supporting one another. After many years of knowing each other, we were both looking to grow in a different aspect of what we were currently doing and decided to join forces.

Tell us a little bit more about Travel Savvi

We primarily cater to vacation travelers but specialize in destination weddings, honeymoons, romantic getaways and family vacations. Our biggest strength is working with our clients to ensure we are qualifying them for their perfect vacation based on their travel needs, wants and preferred budget.

What has been your favorite travel experience?

Kristi:

This is a tough one because I love each trip. Probably the times I get to travel with my family. A couple specific times were when my kids were little and seeing how magical Disney was to them, and the first time I took them to Mexico for them to experience a place I frequented and loved so much are at the top of the list.

Beach with the family

Brittany:

I don’t have a favorite as every single trip I take is an amazing new experience. Traveling with my family and friends brings great joy and fantastic memories!

Amsterdam with the family but the water.

What is one destination you would recommend to everyone?

Kristi:

I don’t think there is a one size fits all destination. Part of what we do is working with someone to find which destination is right for them. I think an all-inclusive vacation is a type of trip everyone should try. For the person that may be a little intimidated to go somewhere, it’s the perfect choice for ease of flights, transfer and stay all included! Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican are perfect destinations for an all-inclusive vacation.

Brittany:

Mexico and Hawaii – two of my favorite destinations to spend the days relaxing and exploring.

What is one piece of advice you would give a female looking to start her own business in the travel industry?

Kristi:

Asking yourself a few questions: Do I like to help others? Am I willing to put myself out there to let people know what I do? Am I willing to learn and continue to learn to stay on top of the latest travel trends? Passion for travel is a huge, but wanting to help others discover their own love of travel is key.  I know that this is the right fit for me when I get just as excited for my clients vacation as I am for my own trip.

Brittany:

This industry is tough and can be a lot more stressful than one would think. The magic ingredient is not “loving to travel” but “loving to BOOK travel”. Having the opportunity to travel is a huge advantage but isn’t going to make you amazing at your job. Loving people, being able to problem solve and enjoying the process of research and booking travel are all crucial to succeed in this business.

Beth with Wanderful

Beth the founder of Wanderful

What role did travel play for you in your younger days?

My mom laughs about this all the time. Apparently when I was a child I absolutely hated to travel. I hated leaving places that I loved and would cry for hours when going back home. I think about that a lot now and what I realize is that I’m a lover of places. It’s not that I don’t like being home – in fact, when I’m home I am a big-time nester and I’m always decorating and making the house cozy. It’s just that I love to be in the place that I am at the time that I’m there and I really try to relish that.

I was lucky enough to grow up traveling with my parents and my family to places like Disney World and Cape Cod and even on one amazing European vacation, but I honestly don’t remember too much from it.  The first real travel experience that impacted me was when I studied abroad in Portugal in college. It really profoundly changed me. My family is Portuguese so it was as much studying abroad as it was rediscovering my roots and meeting so much of my family that I never really knew and learning their language. It opened up a part of me that I didn’t know existed and I think that part of me just grew from there.

What is Wanderful and how did it come about?

In 2009 I was traveling in a country called Sao Tome and Principe off the west coast of Africa.  I was a young woman living a pretty hyper local experience in a place that was quite different from where I’d grown up and it really affected me to be in that place. I started thinking about a woman’s experience abroad, which was so much more than what society tells us it is – beauty magazines and super fashionable travel and all. I really wanted to explore what it meant to be a woman in the world until I started writing about it. That was the seed that eventually became Wanderful.

What is the mission of Wanderful?

Wanderful is an international community of over 40,000 women travelers. Our mission is to help empower women to travel using a live network of others who have been there. We do this through events in 46 cities around the world, global community gatherings like the Women in Travel Summit and Wanderfest, and the first-ever identity verified Woman to Woman Home Sharing Network.

Wanderfest in Austin 2019

Where is Wanderful located, and in what ways can female travelers get involved?

I think the really neat thing about Wanderful is that we really are everywhere. We have a very active Facebook group called Wanderful Women Who Travel which includes over 9,000 women from around the world that share travel tips with each other. But then we also have Chapters that meet for coffee gatherings, brunches, and outings. But our home sharing network is going to allow women to actually physically host each other in their homes and meet up with each other whether or not there is actually a chapter there, which I’m really excited about. It means that we can now create a place where you can stop in any airport around the world and there can be somebody there from the Wanderful Community who can guide you.

Find a local Chapter near you here.

Wanderful Women

Where do you see Wanderful going in the next 5- 10 years?

It’s really exciting for me that more and more women are traveling the world alone these days. Even 10 years ago, it was so much less common and now it’s becoming a lot more of a regular occurrence. I think we’re going to continue to see that movement in the next 5 to 10 years, and what I hope that means is that we are going to see a change in travel with it. More women and travel leadership and more solutions for women when they travel that become part of mainstream culture. I hope the Wanderful can be not only a part of these solutions but also a leader in some of them.

Beth the founder of Wanderful being interviewed.

What has been your favorite travel experience?

I think Istanbul is still one of my favorite cities. It was when I was there that I heard the Muslim call to prayer for the first time, and I found it absolutely beautiful. I think that’s what’s really special about travel – immersing yourself in someone’s daily life which is so normal for them and so different for you and really taking a moment to appreciate how unique we all are.

What is one destination you would recommend to everyone?

Being Portuguese American, of course Portugal is one of my top recommendations for people. Of course, it’s not quite the hidden gem that used to be – a lot of Americans are really discovering how cool is a country it is and how inexpensive a flight from the East Coast is, so it’s less of a surprise! But if you stop about halfway through the Atlantic and end in the Azores, a Portuguese Archipelago, you might still find some surprise there. It’s such an amazing place. You can visit a pineapple farm, cook your dinner inside a volcano, go wine tasting, and even see a bunch of old Portuguese guys wearing Red Sox hats all in the same day.

What is one piece of advice you would give a female looking to start her own business in the travel industry?

I think travel is honestly a really challenging industry. Many entrepreneurs will tell you that the business you’re creating is much more likely to succeed if it solves a pain point – if its a “medicine” – more than if it just improves something that is working okay – a “vitamin”. I think in the travel space you find a lot more vitamins than you do medicine and so it’s really important to think critically about what the problem is that you’re solving for, and if it’s solving for a real need.

Caitlin with Waypoint Goods

Caitlin the founder of Waypoint Goods

What role did travel play in your life growing up?

I grew up in a rural part of South Denver, and we were constantly outside and adventuring. My family raced motorcycles, so every weekend we were off on a family van trip to some remote parts of the Western US.  This fostered my love of nomadic travel and our current #vanlife adventures! I didn’t do a ton of international travel as a child, so my study abroad in college to Florence, Italy was when I was entirely consumed with absorbing and immersing myself in new cultures. I have had an incurable wanderlust ever since then and have built my life and my business around travel!

What were you doing before Waypoint Goods and how did Waypoint Goods come about?

I spent the majority of my life 100% convinced that I wanted to be an Architect. I was in the architecture studio while all my friends were at the bar for the 6 years it takes to get a Masters of Architecture. I promptly took all 7 of my exams, did my internship hours and got licensed. Whew! Made it! Except once I finally climbed this crazy mountain to the top, it really wasn’t what I had expected. I loved the creativity and problem-solving aspects, but the day to day life didn’t bring me any joy, so I knew I desperately needed to find an alternative lifestyle to the standard 8-5. I love to be outside, traveling, seeing new places and trying new things. Sitting at a desk all day and living for two weeks a year of vacation would never fulfill my soul.  I began looking into other industries and other opportunities that would give me the freedom I craved. I knew I wanted to create a company based on travel that I would be able to run while traveling myself. E-commerce was the way to go. An incredible mentor helped show me the ropes and walk me through the early stages, including getting going on Amazon. It was a crazy journey, but I am so glad to have refocused on what lifestyle I wanted and create a business around that!

What does the next year look like for Waypoint Goods?

The next year is super crazy for us! Last year was explosive and this year, we are making plans and growing more sustainably. I hired a social media & marketing team to help me spread the word and a business strategist to help me grow, expand and make the best decisions I can. I am going to be spending a lot of time writing and storytelling, especially about the origin, inspiration, and creation of the CITY series patterns.  There are some fun things coming up! We will be launching our new Lightweight collection in June! This includes a few new CITY series prints and some complementary solid colors too. We are doing a serious relaunch of our STADIUM series and going to focus on colleges and college sports teams. Stay tuned for the cooler weather for a Heavyweight wool collection.

Where do you see Waypoint Goods going in the next 5-10 years?

There are some really exceptional things I have planned for us in the next few years. We will be mixing in more patterns from incredible female artists and creatives. My favorite is that we are going to continue to work with incredible groups supporting women, like the Marshall Direct Fund, who we donate 100% of the proceeds of the Summiya scarf to help fund girls education in Pakistan. I am also developing a non-profit branch that will make these types of projects more accessible. We are working on way to be able to fund a travel scholarship for a featured artist who will produce a textile pattern that will be turned into a scarf pattern! I absolutely cannot wait!

What has been your favorite travel experience?

My favorite travel experience was one I planned for the day I finished my hardest semester in Grad School.  I did my final studio review and then my then boyfriend (now husband) dropped me off at the airport. I woke up in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for a 3-week solo trip. I had a flight out of Hanoi but no other plans. I spent the next few weeks exploring a totally foreign culture and learning that I have all of the inner strength, resourcefulness, and confidence that I need to do anything in the world. I made friends, had spontaneous motorcycle adventures, ate bizarre foods (squid jerkey!), got lost, missed busses, climbed mountains, rode in unusual vehicles, and learned that being humble, kind and polite goes a long way. Years later, this trip still serves as a pivotal moment in my life.

What is one destination you would recommend to everyone?

Cuba! It is so close but so strangely unique. The people are exceptional, the food is to die for and the music will keep you dancing all night. It’s one of the few places I will keep going back to.

What is one piece of advice you would give a female looking to start her own business in the travel industry?

Anything worth doing will be hard.

There is no silver bullet or shortcut. You have to put in the time, effort and energy to make something meaningful and successful. You have to love what you. That passion will drive you. There are ups and downs and the highs are super high and the lows are painfully low. You will go through all of them, over and over again. It is worth it. You are worth it.  As women, we are passionate and driven and surrounding yourself with other like-minded women will help encourage and inspire you!

Top 10 Things to Do in Aruba

Photos of the ocean in Aruba and the butterfly farm. Top 10 Things To Do In Aruba

Aruba’s slogan is ‘One Happy Island’ for a reason. There is so much to do on this tiny 74 square foot island, but you always feel relaxed and happy no matter what you’re doing. From relaxing on some of the top rated beaches in the world to exploring the Arikok National Park, here are my top 10 recommendations of what to do when visiting the beautiful island of Aruba.

1. Visit Flamingo Island

Flying into Aruba, you will land in the capital, Oranjestad. My recommendation is to stay two nights at the Renaissance Aruba Hotel and Casino, which is just a quick 10 minute taxi ride from the airport. That way you have time to explore the capital AND you can spend a full day at Flamingo Island! The Renaissance Hotel owns their own private island that guests can visit for free. The Island is technically called Renaissance Island and the Flamingo Island side is adults only and the Iguana Island side is family friendly. There are day passes for non-hotel guests, but it costs $99 per day per visitor and they only give out about 30 guest passes a day. On average, staying at the Renaissance Hotel costs $150 per night. Since I was staying with my husband, it was more cost effective and easier to stay at the hotel. Then we were guaranteed a full day at the island!

2. Explore Arikok National Park

The west side of Aruba is filled with beautiful white sandy beaches, and the East side of the island is considered the “rugged” part of the island, which includes Arikok National Park. Spending time around the whole island, it is hard to believe these vastly different environments exist on one tiny island. Arikok National Park includes a lot to explore, from caves to natural pools. Some parts of the Park require a 4×4 vehicle (the natural pool areas), so make sure you are driving one of those if you want to visit! It does get VERY hot during the middle of the day, so make sure to get an early start. Entrance fee is $11/person.

3. Yoga at Island Yoga

If you practice yoga, you probably know Yoga Girl, Rachel Brathen. Well, she lives in Aruba and started her own yoga studio called Island Yoga. If you’re lucky and she is in Aruba while you’re there, you can take a class with Rachel! They also offer stand-up-paddleboard yoga classes, have a really cute boutique and delicious cafe with all vegan options. It’s a must-stop while in Aruba.

4. Relax on the Beach

Aruba’s beaches are what tropical vacation postcards are made of. Many of the beaches rank at the top in the world, including Eagle Beach, which was in National Geographic’s Top 24 Best Spots in the Caribbean. My favorite beaches with white sand and crystal, clear blue water (my vision of paradise), were Baby Beach on the southern tip of the island, Eagle Beach and Palm Beach. In Aruba, there are plenty of beaches to choose from to sit back and relax in the sun!

5. Snorkel or Dive

Crystal clear ocean blue water with an off shore shipwreck in Aruba

The ABC (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao) Islands are well known for their snorkeling and scuba diving thanks to the crystal clear blue waters. There are also a lot of shipwrecks, which is where a variety of fish gather. The ship in the photo to the left is a shipwreck we snorkeled and was my favorite snorkel spot. There were so many fish, it was unreal!

Unfortunately, we forgot to charge our Go-Pro and so we couldn’t capture this moment in photos.

A few other great snorkel spots is Baby Beach where we heard some people saw sea turtles, Mangrove Beach where my husband saw an octopus, and Catalina Cove where the water is crystal clear and very calm.

6. Sand Dune Sunrise

The California Sand Dunes are located on the far north corner of the island, just far enough to see a beautiful sunrise over the east side. It is a quick drive from the Palm Beach area. Like the name describes, it’s a large area of sand dunes, so driving there before the sunrise in the pitch black is a small challenge. It is worth it, though. We didn’t see anyone around for the entire sunrise and were able to explore the dunes on our own before heading back to our hotel for breakfast.

Also, an extra special treat for watching the sunrise at the California Sand Dunes is once the sun is up the California Lighthouse is visible!

7. Deep Sea Fishing

Of course this is the part of the trip where my photos decided to disappear, but if you or your partner love fishing, deep sea fishing in Aruba is a must! There are so many types of fish available for catching. This was a special gift for my husband, but we both had a great time. I even caught a Tuna that we had for dinner (proof in the disappeared photos…)! Most of the fishing charters depart from the marina in Oranjestad and there are plenty of great options to choose from!

8. Enjoy Every Sunset

On an island this beautiful, it is no surprise that every sunset is worth watching. Many restaurants in Palm Beach have great views of the sunset that you can enjoy a drink or dinner while catching the last rays of the day. Or just pick a spot on the beach to sit back and relax while the sky puts on a show.

9. Sunset Cruise

Another way to enjoy the sunset is to take a Sunset Cruise. There are multiple companies that offer this, but we decided to go with Red Sail Sports. We loved this group and you can tell the crew really enjoy their job. It’s about a 2 hour sail on a beautiful catamaran with complimentary appetizers, drinks for sale, and music. They depart right from Palm Beach where most of the hotels are located, so it’s very easy to walk to at the end of a day in the sun!

10. Hang With the Butterflies

If you need a break from all the sun and sand, head to The Butterfly Farm, which is right in-between Eagle Beach and Palm Beach. There are free guided tours throughout the day that share so much about the butterflies. You can freely roam the farm as long as you would like, and they provide you a ticket to come back for free during your stay in Aruba. Make sure to wear breathable clothes, it gets hot in there! Entrance fee is $15.

Aruba is a beautiful tropical island with so much to offer. These were just 10 of my favorite things! What do you love to do most in Aruba?
