Everything You Need to Know About Staying at Hammock Cove Resort in Antigua

Everything You Need to Know About a Stay at Hammock Cove Resort in Antigua

In July of 2020 my husband and I headed to Antigua to celebrate my 30th birthday. We had the opportunity to spend a few nights at the brand-new Hammock Cove Resort Antigua. I have never been so blown away by a resort before. It is a small boutique luxury resort with only 42 villas, all with private infinity pools. I felt like royalty staying here and it has easily become my favorite luxury resort. Hammock Cove Resort Antigua needs to be added to your travel bucket list immediately! Treat yourself and your significant other to a romantic, luxury vacation and reconnect in paradise.

Here is everything you need to know about a Stay at Hammock Cove Resort Antigua:

Location of Hammock Cove Resort Antigua

Hammock Cove is located on the Northeast Coast of Antigua. It is just steps away from the famous Devil’s Bridge National Park, which makes for a nice morning or evening walk. It is a 25-minute drive from the V.C. Bird International Airport.

The Beach at the Resort

Unlike at Sandals Grande Antigua, the beach is not the highlight of this resort. Hammock Cove does have a small beach for lounging, but if you are a beach lover, head to Sandals Grande Antigua instead. However, it is about as close as you will get to a private beach in Antigua, so there will be no one bothering you while you relax.

What is Included with your stay at Hammock Cove Resort Antigua

Hammock Cove is a true five-star luxury, adults-only, all-inclusive resort. The dining at all the restaurants were some of the best food I’ve had at an all-inclusive resort. And when they say top-shelf liquor, they mean it.

Here is everything that is included at your stay at Hammock Cove Resort:

  • Unlimited fine dining at 2 restaurants + the beach
  • 24-hour in-villa room service
  • Unlimited premium liquors
  • Wellness activities
  • Non-motorized water sports
  • In-room wet bar
  • Pickleball court
  • Nature’s walk to Devil’s Bridge
  • Afternoon tea
  • Garden tours
  • WiFi
  • Incredible service

The Rooms at Hammock Cove Resort Antigua

Hammock Cove is a small boutique resort. There are only 42 private villas on the property. They also make it very simple. Each villa is exactly the same, you just pick between oceanfront or oceanview. The villas here are the ultimate level of luxury and are 1,080 square feet each. They have classic vaulted ceilings, locally made hardwood furnishings, private infinity-edge plunge pools, sunbeds, a hanging chair, a wet bar, and an enormous bathroom. I have never stayed somewhere so luxurious. I never wanted to leave our room! This is the ultimate romantic resort for couples.

Dining Options

Being such a small, boutique resort, there are limited dining options. There are two restaurants on-site. You can also order food to the beach during the day, enjoy 24-hour in-villa dining, and have a private dining experience overlooking the ocean. The restaurants rotate their menus every day, so you will never get bored. And one night a week, they have a 7-course dining experience at the Lighthouse. I am a picky eater, and I ate everything they served us. It was incredible!

Private dining overlooking the ocean

Also, if you are celebrating something special, they will treat you! They made a beautiful cake for my 30th birthday. The bartender at Irina’s also got the whole bar to take birthday shots with me! The entire staff made us feel so welcome our entire stay.

Activities and Entertainment at the Resort

This is a boutique resort that does not have a lot of entertainment. It is perfect for couples looking to relax and reconnect, but not ideal for couples who want a ton of entertainment.

During the day, you can enjoy fitness and wellness activities, pickleball, or a walk to Devil’s Bridge. Spend some time on the water with non-motorized water sports, like stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, snorkeling, and pedal boating. You can enjoy a day at the spa or island excursions for an extra fee.

Beach activities at Hammock Cove Resort Antigua

At night after dinner, we would just hang out around one of the bars and make friends with the bartender or other guests.

Who Should Stay at Hammock Cove Resort Antigua?

This resort is perfect for couples looking for a romantic, quiet getaway. There isn’t a ton of entertainment on-site, so if you’re looking for a big party scene, this isn’t the resort for you. After a year like 2020, my husband and I needed a place to getaway and reconnect together. This was the best place for that. If you’re celebrating your honeymoon or a milestone anniversary, definitely splurge consider a stay at Hammock Cove Resort Antigua.

The Beach at the Resort

For me, a beautiful beach is top priority for a tropical vacation. This Sandals Resort has one of the best beaches in their resort collection. It is located on Dickenson Bay, the top-rated beaches in Antigua. The sand is soft and pure white, looking perfect against the turquoise blue waters. If you are a beach person and are looking for a perfect tropical beach, this is it.

With an all-inclusive resort, you may be wondering what is actually included? Sandals Resorts go above and beyond the traditional inclusions in an all-inclusive property. Here is an overview of everything included in your all-inclusive package at Sandals Grande Antigua:

The Rooms at Sandals Grande Antigua

Sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming with the number of room categories that the Sandals brand offers. At Sandals Grande Antigua, I really liked having the variety. It allows you to truly have the vacation of your dreams. Make sure to talk to your travel agent (me!) to make sure you are getting the perfect room for your vacation.

Here are some insider knowledge when deciding which room category you should go with:

  • It looks like they are in the process of slowly updating each room at this resort. Just know that your room may not look as updated as the ones pictured online.
  • There are different room category levels with different inclusions. For example, unless you are a club level or above, you do not have 24/hour room service. If room service is important to you, pick out a club level or higher room category.

I had the opportunity to tour a few different room categories while at Sandals Grande Antigua, including the Caribbean Beachfront Grande Luxe Walkout Club Level, Mediterannean Club Level Suite, and the Mediterranean One Bedroom Butler Villa with Private Pool Sanctuary. Please let me know if you have any questions about the variety of room categories offered at this resort!

Dining Options

You could easily spend more than a week at Sandals Grande Antigua because they have so many different dining options. I was there for only a short time, so I didn’t get to try everything (and menus and dining were modified due to COVID), but these were some of my favorites:

  • Bayside Restaurant for breakfast. Normally it is a buffet, but right now it is al la carte. Really delicious omelets!
  • Dinner at Barefoot by the Sea. I think this was my favorite meal. Delicious seafood right by the ocean.
  • Drinks at snacks at the Drunken Duck. At night we enjoyed some snacks and drinks while playing pool at the Drunken Duck.
  • Sushi dinner at Soy. It wasn’t the best sushi in the whole world, but there were a lot of options and it was fun to be able to try so many thanks to the all-inclusive feature.

Nighttime Entertainment at the Resort

Each night offers different entertainment options throughout the resort. There is live music, live shows, different theme parties, and quieter options like playing pool at the Drunken Duck or sitting by the fire pits next to the ocean. I’m not a big night party person (I enjoy going to bed early) but there was definitely enough entertainment in my opinion.

Insider Tips when Visiting Sandals Grande Antigua

One of the best views can be found on the top floor of the Cypress Tower. Head here at sunset for incredible views of the entire resort and ocean.

Staying at Sandals Grande Antigua property with the best ocean view

Sandals Grande Antigua is continually rated as the “World’s Most Romantic Resort” year after year for a reason. I feel like this resort is pretty spread out with a lot of small tucked away romantic spots. There are fire pits spread throughout the resort, swings to hideaway and cuddle on and plenty of private room options to pick from. If you’re looking for a romantic getaway or honeymoon option with your significant other, I highly recommend Sandals Grande Antigua.

8 Things To Do In Antigua For Couples

8 Things To Do In Antigua For Couples

Antigua is the perfect island in the Caribbean for couples. With 366 white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, it’s no surprise that Antigua has been voted the “Most Romantic Destination” in the Caribbean by the World Travel Awards 4 years in a row. I visited Antigua with my hubby and I agree 100%! Whether you are looking for a destination for your wedding, honeymoon, or just getaway together as a couple, Antigua has romantic options for you.

When you visit with your significant other, make sure to try these 8 things in Antigua for couples:

1. Antigua for Couples: Swim with the Stingrays

Have you swum with the stingrays? Don’t worry, these stingrays are gentle and friendly. Head to Stingray City on the north-east coast of Antigua to interact and swim with the rays in their natural environment. Have your photo taken or bring your Go-Pro so you and your significant other have a keepsake of this unique experience.

2. Day Trip to Barbuda

The island of Barbuda is a 90-minute ferry ride or a short flight from Antigua. Spend the day exploring caves, like Darby’s Cave, snorkel the crystal clear blue waters, and sunbathing on gorgeous pink sandy beaches.

3. Antigua for Couples: Go on a Sunset Cruise

One of my favorite excursions to go on with my hubby while on a tropical vacation is a sunset cruise. They are so relaxing, fun, and romantic, especially in a place with incredible sunsets like Antigua. You also may make a few friends!  I would recommend enjoying a sunset cruise on the Caribbean side of the island since the waters are calmer than the Atlantic Ocean side.

4. Take a Local Cooking Class Together

Try to learn a new skill by taking a local cooking class together! Companies like Nicole’s Table teach you how to prepare a delicious home-cooked meal inspired by the flavors of the Caribbean. The classes are taught in a local eco-friendly Antiguan home. While cooking, you will use locally sourced ingredients to create a dish that will have you remembering the delicious dishes of Antigua.

5. Antigua for Couples: Enjoy a Private Moonlit Dinner on the Beach

Many resorts, like Hammock Cove and Sandals Grande Antigua, offer the option to have a private dinner on the beach. Some Caribbean Islands can be buggy and very windy at night, but I didn’t find this to be the case while in Antigua. This would be an ideal place to have a private dinner on the beach with your significant other!

5. Relax Together with a Couples Massage

Nothing is more relaxing and connecting than taking a day at the spa together. Stay at a resort, like Sandals Grande Antigua or Hammock Cove, with a high-quality spa with treatments for couples. Some spas even have massage classes that will teach you how to give great massages to your partner.

6. Antigua for Couples: Kayak through the Mangroves

Most visitors spend their time on the beach when in Antigua. Take a break from the beach and head inward. Go on a kayak trip through the mangrove lagoon! Tours like Lagoon Adventure Tour will guide you through the mangroves to a secluded beach for a private picnic lunch.

7. Hire a Private Driver to Show You Around Antigua

Hiring a local private driver to take you around the island for a day is the best way to experience Antigua, in my opinion. You can customize the stops you make. The driver will happily share the history of Antigua and take you to some hidden gems. You get to do it all on your own time at your own pace. And you have someone to take photos of you and your significant other.

8 Things To Do In Antigua For Couples
Aruba clear ocean with views of a wrecked ship

Top 10 Things to Do in Aruba

Photos of the ocean in Aruba and the butterfly farm. Top 10 Things To Do In Aruba

Aruba’s slogan is ‘One Happy Island’ for a reason. There is so much to do on this tiny 74 square foot island, but you always feel relaxed and happy no matter what you’re doing. From relaxing on some of the top rated beaches in the world to exploring the Arikok National Park, here are my top 10 recommendations of what to do when visiting the beautiful island of Aruba.

1. Visit Flamingo Island

Flying into Aruba, you will land in the capital, Oranjestad. My recommendation is to stay two nights at the Renaissance Aruba Hotel and Casino, which is just a quick 10 minute taxi ride from the airport. That way you have time to explore the capital AND you can spend a full day at Flamingo Island! The Renaissance Hotel owns their own private island that guests can visit for free. The Island is technically called Renaissance Island and the Flamingo Island side is adults only and the Iguana Island side is family friendly. There are day passes for non-hotel guests, but it costs $99 per day per visitor and they only give out about 30 guest passes a day. On average, staying at the Renaissance Hotel costs $150 per night. Since I was staying with my husband, it was more cost effective and easier to stay at the hotel. Then we were guaranteed a full day at the island!

2. Explore Arikok National Park

The west side of Aruba is filled with beautiful white sandy beaches, and the East side of the island is considered the “rugged” part of the island, which includes Arikok National Park. Spending time around the whole island, it is hard to believe these vastly different environments exist on one tiny island. Arikok National Park includes a lot to explore, from caves to natural pools. Some parts of the Park require a 4×4 vehicle (the natural pool areas), so make sure you are driving one of those if you want to visit! It does get VERY hot during the middle of the day, so make sure to get an early start. Entrance fee is $11/person.

3. Yoga at Island Yoga

If you practice yoga, you probably know Yoga Girl, Rachel Brathen. Well, she lives in Aruba and started her own yoga studio called Island Yoga. If you’re lucky and she is in Aruba while you’re there, you can take a class with Rachel! They also offer stand-up-paddleboard yoga classes, have a really cute boutique and delicious cafe with all vegan options. It’s a must-stop while in Aruba.

4. Relax on the Beach

Aruba’s beaches are what tropical vacation postcards are made of. Many of the beaches rank at the top in the world, including Eagle Beach, which was in National Geographic’s Top 24 Best Spots in the Caribbean. My favorite beaches with white sand and crystal, clear blue water (my vision of paradise), were Baby Beach on the southern tip of the island, Eagle Beach and Palm Beach. In Aruba, there are plenty of beaches to choose from to sit back and relax in the sun!

Baby Beach in Aruba with white sandy beaches and crystal clear blue ocean water.

5. Snorkel or Dive

Crystal clear ocean blue water with an off shore shipwreck in Aruba

The ABC (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao) Islands are well known for their snorkeling and scuba diving thanks to the crystal clear blue waters. There are also a lot of shipwrecks, which is where a variety of fish gather. The ship in the photo to the left is a shipwreck we snorkeled and was my favorite snorkel spot. There were so many fish, it was unreal!

Unfortunately, we forgot to charge our Go-Pro and so we couldn’t capture this moment in photos.

A few other great snorkel spots is Baby Beach where we heard some people saw sea turtles, Mangrove Beach where my husband saw an octopus, and Catalina Cove where the water is crystal clear and very calm.

6. Sand Dune Sunrise

The California Sand Dunes are located on the far north corner of the island, just far enough to see a beautiful sunrise over the east side. It is a quick drive from the Palm Beach area. Like the name describes, it’s a large area of sand dunes, so driving there before the sunrise in the pitch black is a small challenge. It is worth it, though. We didn’t see anyone around for the entire sunrise and were able to explore the dunes on our own before heading back to our hotel for breakfast.

Sunrise over the ocean in Aruba

Also, an extra special treat for watching the sunrise at the California Sand Dunes is once the sun is up the California Lighthouse is visible!

California Lighthouse in Aruba

7. Deep Sea Fishing

Of course this is the part of the trip where my photos decided to disappear, but if you or your partner love fishing, deep sea fishing in Aruba is a must! There are so many types of fish available for catching. This was a special gift for my husband, but we both had a great time. I even caught a Tuna that we had for dinner (proof in the disappeared photos…)! Most of the fishing charters depart from the marina in Oranjestad and there are plenty of great options to choose from!

8. Enjoy Every Sunset

On an island this beautiful, it is no surprise that every sunset is worth watching. Many restaurants in Palm Beach have great views of the sunset that you can enjoy a drink or dinner while catching the last rays of the day. Or just pick a spot on the beach to sit back and relax while the sky puts on a show.

9. Sunset Cruise

Another way to enjoy the sunset is to take a Sunset Cruise. There are multiple companies that offer this, but we decided to go with Red Sail Sports. We loved this group and you can tell the crew really enjoy their job. It’s about a 2 hour sail on a beautiful catamaran with complimentary appetizers, drinks for sale, and music. They depart right from Palm Beach where most of the hotels are located, so it’s very easy to walk to at the end of a day in the sun!

Sunset Cruise in Aruba

10. Hang With the Butterflies

If you need a break from all the sun and sand, head to The Butterfly Farm, which is right in-between Eagle Beach and Palm Beach. There are free guided tours throughout the day that share so much about the butterflies. You can freely roam the farm as long as you would like, and they provide you a ticket to come back for free during your stay in Aruba. Make sure to wear breathable clothes, it gets hot in there! Entrance fee is $15.

Aruba is a beautiful tropical island with so much to offer. These were just 10 of my favorite things! What do you love to do most in Aruba?

Where to Stay in Aruba

Flamingo floatie in a pool - Where to Stay In Aruba

Are you heading to Aruba but have no idea where to stay to get the most out of your experience? When I went to Aruba, I chose to stay at two different hotels. Here are my recommendations for where to stay on this One Happy Island!

I heart Aruba Sign.

Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino

The first hotel we stayed at was the Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino. There are two main reasons we chose this hotel to stay at for two nights, with the second one being the biggest driving factor!

  1. This hotel is located in the capitol of Aruba, Oranjestad, and is very close to the airport. We landed late at night so easy access to our hotel was a bonus.
  2. They have their own private island with FLAMINGOS on it! Staying at this hotel gives you free access to this island. So of course we booked two nights here to spend one full day at the island of flamingos! This private island also has hammocks in the water. If you want a unique, perfect island day in the sun, I’d highly recommend staying at this hotel for easy access!

Boardwalk Hotel

The second hotel I stayed at is an affordable, smaller boutique hotel in Palm Beach called the Boardwalk Hotel. This hotel isn’t directly on the beach, but just a short walk across the road will get you to their private part of the beach in-between the Ritz-Carlton and Marriott.

The Boardwalk has individual casitas that includes a patio, hammock, kitchen, indoor sitting area, room and bathroom. I enjoyed having the option to cook our meal if I wanted to! It also felt like you were sitting in the jungle with the beach just steps away.

I think my favorite part of this hotel, though, is the swimming pool. Surrounded by beautiful landscape it feels like your own personal sanctuary in the jungle.

Boardwalk Hotel in Aruba pool and floatie flamingo.

There are many lodging options, including all-inclusive hotels in Aruba. I think the next time I go, I will try one that is directly on the beach in the Palm Beach area!
