Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Review: Our 10th Anniversary in an Overwater Bungalow Feature Photo

Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Review: 10th Anniversary in an Overwater Bungalow

November 3, 2026/in French Polynesia, Honeymoon, Hotels

For the first part of our 10th wedding anniversary, my husband and I wanted somewhere that offered more adventure prior to a relaxing stay in Bora Bora. Moorea checked every box, and Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort had just finished a full renovation. Add one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, and it was an easy choice.

Here’s the funny part: I booked it for that beach because I love a great beach, and we barely set foot on it. Our overwater bungalow was simply too good to leave. Coffee at sunrise, snorkeling straight off the deck, and sunsets with Tahiti glowing in the distance became our daily rhythm.

The bottom line: If you want an overwater bungalow with snorkeling right outside your door, Sofitel Moorea delivers, and it earned a 5 out of 5 from us.

Arrival and First Impressions

We took the ferry over from Papeete, picked up our rental car, and made the short drive to the resort. Sofitel sits close to both the ferry terminal and the Moorea airport, so you go from arrival to bungalow with very little effort.

We arrived in the morning, so our room wasn’t ready yet. That’s normal for an early arrival, and it worked in our favor. We dropped our bags, headed out for lunch and some shopping around the island, and came back to a ready room and an easy, seamless check-in.

Tip: If you’re arriving on an early ferry, plan a few hours of exploring before check-in. Having a car makes this easy.

Our Superior Overwater Bungalow

The entire resort was recently renovated and I was very excited to see the updates since my work trip in 2024. Our Superior Overwater Bungalow felt fresh, bright, and thoughtfully updated.

The view was the real showstopper. Our bungalow overlooked the beach, close enough to enjoy it but far enough away that it still felt private. Beyond that was open ocean, with the island of Tahiti rising on the horizon.

Then there was the snorkeling. You can step off your deck and into the lagoon, and the marine life right below us was fantastic. My husband was in the water constantly. If snorkeling is high on your list, this is a major advantage. At our next stop in Bora Bora, snorkeling off the bungalow wasn’t an option, which made us appreciate Moorea even more.

Our days started and ended on that deck. We’d sip coffee as the sun came up and return each evening to watch the sunset. Having two toddlers at home, these quiet moments ended up being a favorite part of our anniversary.

The Beach, Lagoon, and Pool

Sofitel’s beach is widely considered one of the best on Moorea and a big reason the resort is so popular. It’s the main reason I booked it for our trip.

But here’s my takeaway: when your overwater bungalow comes with its own snorkeling spot and a view like ours, the beach and pool become a bonus rather than the main event. We loved our deck so much that we never felt the need to leave it.

If you’re booking a garden or beach room instead of an overwater bungalow, the beach will be your go-to, and you won’t be disappointed.

Tip: For the best overlook of the resort, head to the To’atea Panoramic Viewpoint on the hill just north of Sofitel. It’s a quick stop from the road with sweeping views of the overwater bungalows, the coral-dotted lagoon, the reef, and Tahiti in the distance. Bring your camera.

Breakfast at Sofitel Moorea

Our stay included the breakfast buffet, and it was fantastic. The view over the water was beautiful, and the variety meant there was something for every craving each morning.

We didn’t dine much on property otherwise. Moorea is an island made for exploring, and with a rental car, we loved heading out to try local spots for lunch and dinner.

Celebrating an Anniversary at Sofitel Moorea

Sofitel made our 10th anniversary feel special from the moment we settled in. We were welcomed with a gift box filled with thoughtful keepsakes: a scarf, luggage tags, sunglasses, snacks, and a bottle of champagne. It was such a sweet touch.

Our favorite celebration, though, was the simplest one. Sunsets on our private deck with Tahiti on the horizon felt more romantic than any reservation we could have made.

Tip: Celebrating something? Make sure the hotel knows ahead of time. Booking through a travel advisor means the occasion gets noted before you arrive. We love to throw in extra special surprises for our travelers!

Exploring Moorea: Coming Soon

We spent plenty of time off property, from a half-day swim (attempt) with humpback whales to driving the island in our rental car. My full Moorea guide is coming soon, with everything we did, where we ate, and what I’d plan for your own trip.

What I’d Tell a Client About Sofitel Moorea

Book the overwater bungalow. This is where Sofitel Moorea shines. Snorkeling from your own deck isn’t a given at every overwater resort in French Polynesia, and it made our stay extra special.

It’s ideal if you want:

  • A beautiful beach (even if your bungalow steals the show)
  • Views of Tahiti across the water
  • Quick access to the ferry and airport, which makes arrival and departure easy

Consider Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort instead if you want:

  • To be closer to the central point of all the activities on the island
  • Open sea views without an island in the distance, since the Hilton sits on Moorea’s north shore

Plan to dine out. On-site dinner options are limited. Rent a car and explore Moorea’s restaurants. That’s half the fun of this island anyway.

Sofitel Moorea Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Freshly renovated throughout
  • Excellent snorkeling right off the overwater bungalow decks
  • Gorgeous views of Tahiti
  • One of Moorea’s most beautiful beaches
  • Fantastic breakfast buffet with plenty of variety
  • Close to the ferry terminal and airport
  • Thoughtful touches for special occasions

Cons

  • Limited on-site dinner options
  • Farther from the center of the island’s activity

Sofitel Moorea FAQ

Is Sofitel Moorea Worth It?

Yes, especially if you book an overwater bungalow. The recent renovation, the snorkeling off your deck, and the views of Tahiti make it a standout on Moorea.

Does Sofitel Moorea have overwater bungalows?

Yes. We stayed in a Superior Overwater Bungalow overlooking the beach, with direct lagoon access for snorkeling from the deck.

Can you snorkel from the overwater bungalows at Sofitel Moorea?

Yes, and it was one of our favorite parts of the stay. The marine life right below our deck kept my husband in the water every day.

How do you get to Sofitel Moorea from Tahiti?

Take the ferry from Papeete or a short flight to Moorea. The resort is close to both the ferry terminal and the airport, and renting a car makes it easy to get there and explore.

Is Sofitel Moorea good for an anniversary or honeymoon?

Absolutely. Private decks, sunrise and sunset views, and special touches for celebrations make it a romantic choice.

Should I choose Tahiti, Fiji, or the Maldives?

It depends on your travel style. The Islands of Tahiti are perfect for couples who want romance plus adventure, with shorter flights from the U.S. and calm lagoons. See my full breakdown in Tahiti vs Fiji vs Maldives: How to Choose the Best Island for Your Vacation.
