The Ultimate Guide to a 5 Day Gulf Coast Road Trip

The Ultimate Guide to a 5 Day Gulf Coast Road Trip

Did you know that driving from New Orleans, Louisiana to Gulf Shores, Alabama is only a 3-hour drive? In those three hours, you can check-off three states! One day I was looking to do a long weekend trip and was looking to check off a few states. This route came on my radar and since it was by the ocean, I was 100% in. This is also a perfect itinerary to do in winter because it is still relatively warm! This is a pretty simple trip, but you can pack a lot in a few days.

Here is an itinerary for a 5 Day Gulf Coast Road Trip.

Day 1: Louisiana

Mardi Gras Beads on a fence in New Orleans to see on a gulf coast road trip

Arrive in New Orleans, Louisiana

To make the most of your vacation time, fly into New Orleans on the first flight in the morning. I flew out of Denver, Colorado at 6:20am and arrived in New Orleans at 10:00am. The first two days I decided to spend in New Orleans since there is just so much to see and do in this unique city.

Where to Stay in New Orleans

I wanted to save some money while in New Orleans, so I decided to stay at an Airbnb outside of the city. The Airbnb I stayed at had free parking, a full kitchen, and one room. It was also only one block off Magazine Street, which made it easy to take the free trolly into the city when I wanted.

Here is the link to the Airbnb I stayed at in New Orleans.

Breakfast at Ruby Slipper Cafe

First, fuel up first thing in the morning. Head to Ruby Slipper. It is an award-winning cafe and was probably the one place that was most recommended to me. There are quite a few locations throughout New Orleans, but I went to the one in Uptown.

Walk the Shops in Uptown along Magazine Street

To walk off a bit of breakfast, head down Magazine Street for some window shopping. Make sure to stop in Nadeau Furniture but be careful because you may want to take everything home with you just like I did.

Take some time to walk up and down Magazine Street. There were some really beautiful homes and if you are there around Mardi Gras, the homes will be decked out with beads!

Explore Jackson Square in the French Quarter

When you think of New Orleans, you probably think of the French Quarter. Here is where you will see the famous St. Louis Cathedral. As long as there isn’t a mass going on, you can walk inside and take a self-tour.

St Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square French Quarter a must see on a gulf coast road trip

There is normally a ton of artists and street vendors all around Jackson Square. You can even get your palms read right here, too, if that interests you!

Next to Jackson Square is the famous Cafe Du Monde where you have to try the beignets! They are delicious, fresh, and melt-in-your-mouth perfection.

Walk Down Bourbon Street with a Hand Grenade

You can’t really go to New Orleans without checking out Bourbon Street. The big party scene that is Bourbon Street is normally not my vibe, but I wanted to make sure to experience a little bit of it. One of the most famous alcoholic drinks in New Orleans is the Hand Grenade. Personally, I think it is one of the worst drinks ever, but “when in Rome!” You can find these large green, sweet drinks pretty much anywhere on Bourbon Street. Just be warned, you may want to head back to your hotel or Airbnb for a nap after!

Dinner at Basin Seafood and Spirits

Once you sleep off your Hand Grenade, head down Magazine Street for dinner at Basin Seafood and Spirits. They have a lot of great seafood options to choose from along with happy hour on weekdays, brunch on weekends, and a raw oyster special on Mondays.

Wall Art in New Orleans along the path of a gulf coast road trip

Day 2: Louisiana

Breakfast at Horn’s Eatery

Make sure to start the day two off with a bang at Horn’s Eatery. The food was so good here, I wish I could have come back every single day! I got a pretty traditional breakfast of eggs, pancakes, and fruit, but man did they make it taste delicious.

Horn's Restaurant in New Orleans, Louisiana, a must stop along a gulf coast road trip

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve

After breakfast, head out of town for some time with nature. Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve is only about a 30-minute drive south of New Orleans. I ended up going to Barataria Preserve. This preserve has 26,000 acres with bayous, swamps, marshes, and forests. You can walk along the boardwalks and dirt trails to see animals, birds and plants. You may even see an alligator! There are a couple of different loops and trails to pick from so you can decide how long or short of a hike you want to go for.

Drinks and Dinner in New Orleans

Head back to the French Quarter for a cocktail at Sylvain. It is a super cute restaurant in an old carriage house. Enjoy just sitting at the bar with your fun champagne cocktail and watch the bartenders make their drinks.

After a drink, take the free trolley down to Superior Seafood & Oyster Bar. I had the Pasa De La Mer and was in love. I could have probably eaten that the rest of my life. They have a lot of great seafood options here for a pretty reasonable price.

Day 3 Gulf Coast Road Trip: Louisiana –> Mississippi

Breakfast at New Orleans Cake Cafe and Bakery

Before you head to Mississippi, make sure to stop at New Orleans Cake Cafe and Bakery for some breakfast and Kings Cake. You can’t leave New Orleans without having a famous Kings Cake!

King Cake in New Orleans, Louisiana

Check out St. Louis Cemetery No. 3

Another New Orleans staple is the haunting past of the city. Head to St. Louis Cemetery No. 3 for a spook. This cemetery was established in 1854 with rows and rows of marble and stone gravesites. This is one of the less famous cemeteries in New Orleans, but it was on your way out of town, so it works out well. If you want to see the oldest cemetery, head to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, which was established in 1789. However, this one you have to purchase a ticket to get in.

Start the drive to Mississippi

Make sure to take US-90 along the coast when driving to Mississippi. Driving I-10 is faster, but then you won’t be driving along the coast!

Stop for a Beer at Chandeleur Island Brewing Company

Living in Colorado and being married to a husband who loves beer, I have learned to love craft beer. If you like to try new beer, make sure to stop at Chandeleur Island Brewing Company on the way to Biloxi where you will be staying for the night.

Chandeleur Island Brewing Company a must stop along a gulf coast road trip

Where to Stay in Ocean Springs, Mississippi

I highly recommend staying at The Roost Ocean Springs Hotel for your stop in Mississippi. It is a boutique hotel recently renovated out of an old, historic building in Ocean Springs. It is near the beach and downtown Ocean Springs making it a perfect place to stop for the night. I may end up taking some interior decorating notes from this boutique hotel and use them in my house.

Room at Roost Ocean Springs Hotel in Mississippi. Where to stay in Mississippi on your gulf coast road trip

Dinner in Ocean Springs, Mississippi at Murky Waters Ocean Springs

Head downtown for dinner at Murky Waters Ocean Springs. They are well known for their BBQ and they smoke all their meat in-house. Six nights of the week there is also live Blues Music playing at the restaurant.

Day 4 Gulf Coast Road Trip: Mississippi –> Alabama

Breakfast Downtown Ocean Springs

I was going to say, start your morning out at Bayview Gourmet Restaurant, but I just checked for the address on Google and it says it is permanently closed! I won’t go into how good their breakfast was, then…  Anyway, find a great brunch spot in Ocean Springs and check out the local shops before making your way to Alabama.

Explore Dauphin Island, Alabama

Once you reach Alabama, head to Dauphin Island. This is a beautiful and relaxing stop to make before reaching Mobile, Alabama where you will be spending the night. Dauphin Island has beautiful, white sandy beaches and plenty of recreational opportunities. I decided to just walk up and down the beach and enjoy the calm of the ocean waves, but spend as much or as little time exploring this island as you would like!

Where to Stay in Mobile, Alabama

While searching for a place to stay in Mobile, I found this super cute Airbnb. It is located in Historic Midtown, has a fully equipped kitchen, free bikes to use, and a fireplace. It is a really cozy place to stay. Here is a link to the nautical-themed Airbnb.

Dinner in Mobile, Alabama at The Original Oyster House

For dinner, head to The Original Oyster House, which is on the causeway on the way to the Gulf Shores. I got stuffed crab and fried shrimp with hush puppies, coleslaw and potatoes. It was all pretty good for fried seafood. And you can’t go to the South without eating a whole lot of hush puppies!

Day 5 Gulf Coast Road Trip: Mississippi –> Louisiana

Breakfast at The Warehouse Bakery and Donuts

Before heading back to Louisiana for your flight home, you have to check out the Gulf Shores. On your way there, make sure to grab breakfast at The Warehouse Bakery and Donuts. This place is so cute and the food is incredible. If I lived around here, I would find myself working remotely here a lot!

Inside The Warehouse Bakery and Donuts in Alabama along your gulf coast road trip

Spend the Day Enjoying the Beach at Gulf Shores

The Gulf Shores is a great vacation spot with wide, beautiful, white-sandy beaches. If you have more than a long weekend for this road trip, I’d recommend spending an extra few days at the Gulf Shores. When I did this road trip, it was January, so the beach was pretty chilly. Summer here would be great!

Drive Back to New Orleans to Fly Home

It is about a 3 hours drive back to New Orleans, so make sure you allow plenty of time to catch your flight home!

5 Easy Ways to Take Better Videos on your Travels

5 Easy Ways to Take Better Videos on your Travels

Travelers, if you’re like me, you’re wondering how to take better videos while you travel. Well, Annabelle Needles with Evergreen Lane Productions is here to help us! In her guest blog post below, she explains 5 easy ways to take better videos on your travels. Thank you, Annabelle!

5 Easy Ways to Take Better Videos on your Travels

5 Easy Ways to Take Better Videos on your Travels

If you’re like me, you love that your smartphone has made taking photos and videos of your travels super easy and accessible. However, on the flip side, this means that often we take hundreds of photos and video clips on our travels but they end up just disappearing into the digital void, never to be seen or enjoyed again. So how can we be sure that we’re taking great videos on our epic vacations (the family reunion where multiple generations are all together, the epic honeymoon you splurged on, the precious girls weekend after you’ve all become mothers)? I’m here to help, with 5 easy ways to take better videos on your travels. Yes, even with your iPhone!

Take Better Travel Videos with your Phone While Traveling

5 Easy Ways to Take Better Videos on Your Travels

1. Choose a camera orientation and stick to it

Smartphones can take video in two modes, landscape (horizontal) or portrait (vertical). Social media videos like Instagram stories are training us to hold our phones vertically to take and watch videos. That being said, I highly recommend that if you’re going to want to watch your videos on a computer or a TV later, shoot your videos in landscape orientation. This is especially the case if you’re wanting to edit them together afterward into a mini-movie of your trip. As a video editor, I often see clients send me videos in both landscape AND portrait, which makes it more difficult to actually integrate those videos together. The most important thing to consider here is consistency – choose one way to hold your camera while recording video and stick to it throughout your whole trip.

2. Capture a variety of types of video clips

We all have a favorite type of photo or video to take on trips. For me, that’s wide shots of scenery or close-ups of flowers. My husband likes to take selfies upon selfies. The important thing to remember while taking video on your travels is to capture a wide variety of types of videos and not get stuck in one “style.” A video full of pretty views is going to be beautiful but won’t tell much of a story. Same with a video with just flower close-ups or just selfies. Think of it like this: to make interesting writing, you need nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Mix it up and your final video will be able to tell a more complete story of your vacation.

Take Better Travel Videos with your Phone

3. Get as stable as possible

This strange thing happens when we’re watching back video clips later – we could have sworn our hands were so steady but in reality, we were moving all over the place and the video isn’t very fun to watch! Here are some quick tips to increase the stability of your video footage. Don’t hold your breath – sometimes we do this without thinking when we’re concentrating, but slow, even breaths will help your hands stay steady. Keep your hands close to you; the further you extend your arms away from your body, the shakier they get! If possible, use a prop like a wall or a chair as a makeshift tripod and rest your camera on top while you’re filming. I know not everyone has space or budget to invest in video-taking tools, but if you do, I highly recommend a smartphone gimbal. You can see all my gear recommendations here!

4. Count to ten when filming

It’s true that I often use only 2-3 seconds of a video clip in a final video, but few things are worse than when I want to show something for a little bit longer…and the clip just stops! You can always trim video clips in editing later, but you can’t go back in time and film something again, especially if it’s halfway around the world. I recommend simply counting to ten while you’re recording.

5. Focus on the five senses

When you’re taking video, you’ll be focused primarily on the things you can see. Smell-o-vision doesn’t exist yet, of course. However, the things that will trigger your memories best when watching a video later are elements that engage your other senses too – like the sound of the sea waves, the taste of that delicious street food, or the smell of the flowers outside your hotel window. When I was editing an heirloom travel film of a client’s family reunion in Provence, simply watching the videos she took in the lavender fields took me right back to my own trip there many years ago, and I could almost smell the abundant purple flowers through my computer.

How to take more trips in a year

5 Steps To Take More Trips This Year (Even if You Have a Desk Job)

Travelers, I am so excited to be sharing this guest blog post with you by Rachel-Jean Firchau with Rachel Off Duty! I met Rachel at the Women in Travel Summit in 2018 where we bonded over figuring out how to travel more while having full-time jobs. In this blog, she shares 5 steps to take more trips this year, even if you have a full-time blog. Enjoy!

5 steps to take more trips this year, even if you have a desk job
5 steps to take more trips this year, even if you have a desk job
5 steps to take more trips this year, even if you have a desk job

There’s nothing like the first few months of a new year to dream up some incredible adventures. Your mind is fresh and ready to set resolutions and goals. Your calendar is a blank slate. And – best of all – you probably have a fresh pool of vacation time (or knowledge of the number of days you will have available as you accrue this year) to start using.

But life happens quickly, especially in steady rhythm of a 9-to-5 work cycle. And it’s easy to let months go by before realizing you haven’t taken a single day for yourself in ages. In fact, over 55% of Americans end up not using all of the paid time off they earn annually (a whopping 768MM days of unused PTO).

Of course, if you’re reading this article, it’s likely because you don’t want to be a part of that 55%. You want to find ways to make sure you’re getting the most out of your benefits – and your life! – and there’s no better time to start than the present. Read on for some steps towards incorporating more travel into your life, even if you have a desk job.

5 Steps To Take More Trips This Year (Even If You Have a Desk Job)

1. Make a Wish List at the Beginning of the Year

Girl on the top of a mountain

First, decide whether you want to travel more frequently, or take longer trips. Do you want to see a bunch of new places? Or do you like slow travel and hope to maximize your time in that dream destination you’ve been dying to visit? It doesn’t matter what kind of traveler you are; the only thing that matters is making sure you plan ahead! Spend some time at the beginning of the year deciding what your travel goals will be for the next 12 months, where you might want (or need) to go, and how you plan to get there. This can include new cities you want to see that are only a couple hours’ drive away, weekend getaways you want to take with your significant other, weddings and birthdays you need to attend, and possibly even some solo time in a place you’ve never been. Wherever you want to find yourself this year, get out a piece of paper (or a note on your phone) and write it all down.

It may sound like a simple task, but just like making resolutions or vision boards, determining what your destination wish list is at the beginning of the year is a great way to layout your ideal travel schedule and start mapping out the steps you need to take to get there.

2. Decide How Much Time You Want to Spend Where

This step is crucial if you’re working with limited time (i.e. vacation days) or a tight budget. Though vacation time benefits are slowly increasing across the country, on average, US employees are still banking just 10-15 paid days off a year. If you want to do a couple of domestic trips this year, one two-week stint in Greece and still have enough time left over to go home for the holidays, how do you do it?

First, decide how much time you absolutely need to spend in the most important places on your list – the dream destinations and the big events (like weddings, birthdays, and being home for the holidays). Then, work backward from there with what’s left.

3. Divide Up Your Vacation Days & Paid Holidays

Girl on the top of a mountain

The scenario involving Greece, domestic trips, and being home for the holidays may sound a bit far-fetched for a 15-day annual vacation policy, but it is possible with a little strategic timing and flexibility. While you might have only 15 days of time off (for example), you are also working with 104 weekend days and probably somewhere between 7 and 11 paid holidays – that’s 126+ days this year entirely at your disposal!

Two years ago, I vacationed in Australia (pictured) for just over 3 weeks while working full-time. But once you factored out the weekends and paid holidays I planned my trip around, I ended up only being out 13 days of paid time off. Knowing that Australia was going to be my longest trip of the year, I planned the rest of my year accordingly with shorter trips and remote work wherever possible – 2 days off to take a 4-day trip to Alaska, 1 day off to spend 3 days in Mexico, a half-day off to extend a work trip in Utah, a half-day off to take a weekend trip to Seattle… you get the picture!

4. Use Free Weekends for Staycations & One-Day Road Trips

Taking more trips with a Camper van life view

Of course, travel does not always have to involve a flight (or even a long-haul distance, for that matter). I personally love using my free weekends for staycations in my home state, or even one-day road trips if I don’t want to pay for a hotel. You can see and experience a surprising amount in a 24-, 48, or 72-hour period. It does not matter if you’re only somewhere new for a short amount of time. All that matters is that you’re getting out and exploring, rather than sitting at home and saying “I wish.” Working Monday through Friday week in and week out is mentally taxing and can feel draining sometimes. We all need a reset and a change of scenery now and then, even if it’s only for a day or two.

5. Explore Conferences, Sabbatical, and Remote Work Opportunities

While taking your weekends and paid vacation travel is great (and you should 100% use up all the vacation time you earn each year), another fantastic way to squeeze more adventure out of your year is by exploring work-based travel. Are there conferences* you could attend on behalf of your company? Are there remote or sister offices you could visit to train new employees or shadow more senior executives? Do you work at a company that offers a work-from-home or remote work policy? Does your company offer sabbatical leave? While some of these opportunities could result in more work, the trade-off is the potential of exploring a new city or state you may have otherwise not visited, while simultaneously keeping your employer happy. Whenever I take work trips, I always try to take the first flight in and the last flight home (or even extend the entire trip a day or two out of my own pocket) so I can maximize my time there when my work duties are done.

*If your company doesn’t currently attend any conferences, seminars, or networking events, – that’s okay! Don’t be afraid to pitch one or two that you think will be relevant. If your company has the budget to support your knowledge growth while getting the word out about their product or service, odds are, they will (and who knows, you could pave the way for other employees in your office looking for enrichment opportunities and travel, too!).

No matter what your specific travel goals are if your prerogative is to take charge of your life and maximize your adventure potential, start small, start here, and most importantly, start now. With some proactive planning, strategic timing, and the willingness to be open to new opportunities (even ones you may have never previously considered), you’ll be jet-setting in no time, desk job and all.

Top 10 Travel Tips from a Travel Agent

Top 10 Travel Tips from a Travel Agent

Being a travel agent who travels quite a bit, I have learned a lot about travel. I’ve learned travel hacks, the best time to visit destinations, packing tips, money-saving tips, and so much more. I thought I would break down my top 10 travel tips that I think will get you far in the traveling world. I’d love to hear what your favorite travel tips are! Comment below.

Vineyard in Italy

Top 10 travel tips from a travel agent.

1. Plan your trip sooner than later

My number one travel tip is to plan your trip sooner than later. There are many benefits to planning your vacation in advance. Often times resorts will have early bird pricing in hopes to book up their rooms. There are a lot more options for airfare, hotels, and excursions early on because you are looking ahead of everyone else. Also, when working with a travel agent, if you book in advance, you are able to pay in installments, instead of paying the trip all at once. It can really help financially to plan and book your vacation sooner than later.

2. Travel during shoulder or low season

Traveling during the off-season is my favorite time to visit a destination, for example, Aruba during hurricane season!

One of the main reasons I love traveling during the low season is to save money. When you visit a destination when it isn’t peak season means hotels, flights, and activities can be less expensive.

Click here to find out more reasons why it is the best time to travel during off-season and also see great destinations to visit during the off-season.

3. Use a credit card with great travel rewards

If you’re not using a credit card with great travel rewards, you’re throwing money away. First, obviously don’t spend more than you have, but if you are able to use credit cards responsibly, then make sure you are taking advantage of all they have to offer.

Some benefits offered by credit cards that focus on travel are access to airport lounges, free TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, free and discounted travel, and so much more. Two of my favorite credit cards that give amazing travel rewards are Chase Sapphire Reserve and Venture.

4. Get TSA PreCheck and Global Entry

Before I got TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, I didn’t think I needed them. But now that I have both, I will never NOT have them! The convenience and time saved is worth every penny.

TSA PreCheck is used when traveling domestically in the USA and Global Entry is used when re-entering the USA from traveling internationally.

For TSA PreCheck, you get to go through an expedited TSA line where you don’t have to take off shoes or belts or take out anything from your carry on/personal luggage. If you live near a busy airport, this will save you so much time and energy!

Global Entry is basically a fast pass lane through Customs when coming back into the USA. You don’t have to talk to a customs agent or stand in those long lines. You just walk up to a kiosk, scan your passport, answer a few questions, take a picture and you are good to go. After a long international flight, it feels so nice to just breeze through this tedious process.

When you purchase Global Entry, you automatically get TSA PreCheck. That is the route I suggest going. Currently, it is $100 for a 5-year membership, and that included TSA PreCheck. If you purchase TSA PreCheck without Global Entry, it is $85 for a 5-year membership. If you are planning on traveling internationally once or twice in the next five years, get Global Entry.

Another benefit to some credit cards that have great travel rewards is your Global Entry and TSA PreCheck costs are paid for! Then it really is a no brainer to get both if they are free.

5. Know what flight category you’re purchasing

With budget-friendly airlines, like Frontier, now showing up more than ever, other airlines are looking for ways to compete. Most major US Airlines are now offering Basic Economy airline tickets. There is a big difference between Basic Economy airline tickets and Economy airline tickets. Make sure you know the difference before clicking “purchase” or you could be kicking yourself down the way.

Before purchasing your next airline tickets, click here for the details on the differences between basic economy and economy airline tickets.

6. Get travel insurance

Since being a travel agent and working with many families and couples on various different types of vacations, I have learned that travel insurance is crucial. You just never know what is going to happen before or during your vacation that you will need to be covered for.

Different travel insurances cover different things, so make sure you are purchasing exactly what you need. Travel insurance can cover anything from having to cancel a trip for unexpected health reasons, death in a family, jury duty, medical and dental issues while on the trip, lost luggage, and so so much more. When you are investing a good chunk of money on a vacation, it is a good idea to protect that investment as well as your health and belongings while traveling.

If you have questions about travel insurance or need to purchase some for your next vacation, email me at hello@thekeystotravel.com.

7. Notify credit card company of travels

If you plan on using a specific credit card while on vacation, make sure the company knows you will be traveling. When credit card companies see charges on your card in an area you normally a not located, they will put a lock on your account. If you are traveling internationally and don’t have an easy way of approving your charges or proving you are located where you are using your credit card, you could be without money while traveling.

The good thing is that a lot of credit cards know when and where you will be traveling depending on what you purchase with your card. For example, Venture One and Chase cards will make note that you are traveling if you purchase your airline tickets with their credit card. Then when they see you are making other purchases within that time frame in the location your airline tickets are for, they won’t put a hold on your card.

It is always a good idea to double-check with your credit card company that they know you will be traveling and to expect charges on your card from that location.

8. Share your travel itinerary with family or a friend

It is always a wise choice to share your travel itinerary with a friend or family member. You never know what could go wrong or when you will need help, and having someone know where you are in the world can come in handy.

9. Renew or get a passport early

If you are planning on traveling internationally this year, or hope you will be, renew or get your passport now. The processing time for getting passports has extended from 4 weeks to now an average of 6-8 weeks. Don’t wait longer than you have to and risk having to pay more money to expedite your passport to get it in time for your international vacation. If you are getting your passport for the first time, follow these easy steps to make the process easier.

If you already have your passport, check the expiration date. Many countries require your passport to be valid six months AFTER you return from your trip. That means, if you are going to Mexico in January, your passport must be valid through July. If it expires within the 6 months after your trip, you will not be let on the plane.

10. Contact a travel agent for help!

Travel agents are experts in travel and many specialize in specific types of travel, like honeymoons, family vacations, destination weddings, or locations, like Hawaii, Caribbean, or Europe. To save yourself time and money, talk to an expert! It is so helpful to be able to ask your travel questions to an actual human, and not just a Google search. Travel agents can answer all your travel questions, plan your vacation, book your vacation, coordinate all the travel, recommend the best excursions, and so much more.

Some types of vacations are more worthwhile working with a travel agent than others. Click here to see when you should work with a travel agent.

The Best Place to Stay on Ambergris Caye

The Best Place to Stay on Ambergris Caye

Belize is a great travel destination for couples and families that love the tropical feel but also want adventure and plenty of activities. Ambergris Caye, just a quick flight or boat ride from Belize City, is a perfect “home base” for your Belizian vacation. You get the laid back island feel with access to amazing snorkeling, diving, water activities and quick access to mainland adventures like exploring Mayan ruins.

The best place to stay on Ambergris Caye, Belize

When I traveled to Belize, I knew Ambergris Caye is where I wanted to stay. There are plenty of options for accommodations all over the island. I wanted to be a little farther away from the main city, but still with easy access. I wanted a nice pool, beach, and a room with a kitchen, so we didn’t have to eat all our meals out. Once I figured out everything I wanted and my budget, it wasn’t hard to find the perfect hotel!

After visiting Belize, I believe one of the best places to stay on Ambergris Caye is Grand Caribe

Location of Grand Caribe on Ambergris Caye

Grand Caribe is located just outside the main town of San Pedro on Ambergis Caye, Belize. The resort is located 2 miles north of San Pedro. It is easily accessible by a paved road by golf cart (15 minutes) or by taxi (10 minutes).

The best place to stay on Ambergris Caye is the Grand Caribe

How to Get to Grand Caribe

There are quite a few options on how to get to Grand Caribe:

  1. By Airplane
You can take a small plane from Belize City to San Pedro. It is about a 15-minute ride and I highly recommend it! The views are beautiful and it’s a very unique experience to sit on a 14-seater airplane! Once you arrive at the San Pedro Airport, Grand Caribe offers complimentary arrival and departure taxi rides to and from Grand Caribe. Just notify them of your arrival and departure times and they will be there to escort you.
  2. Helicopter Transfer
You can take an even more unique experience to get to Grand Caribe and take a helicopter transfer. Grand Caribe partners with Astrum Helicopters to offer this experience. You can add in a tour of Belize Barrier Reef or the famous Great Blue Hole on your way. Work with the resort to arrange this transfer.
  3. Water Taxi
The most affordable way to get to Grand Caribe is by water taxi. There are regular public water taxis from Belize City. This normally takes 1.5 hours and departs every hour. From the Belize City Airport, you will have to catch a taxi to the water taxi terminal.

Rooms at Grand Caribe

Grand Caribe is a luxury vacation home rental in Ambergris Caye, Belize. The rooms are labeled as condos because they include kitchens, which I liked because then you can cook some meals at home instead of going out for every meal. Some condos are owned by families and others you can rent like a regular hotel room.

Pool at Grand Caribe in Ambergris Caye, Belize

Since this was my husband and my 3rd wedding anniversary trip, I wanted a nice room overlooking the ocean. We went with the One Bedroom Oceanfront room. It was very large with 1000 square feet of living space. There was a kitchen, living area, bedroom, bathroom with tub, a large walk-in closet, and a large balcony overlooking the ocean. I absolutely loved this room! We spent most of our time on the balcony. They also decorated our room for our anniversary. A very special treat!

There are a lot of different size condos on this property, from studios to 4 bedrooms to villas. This is a perfect resort for families of all sizes. One thing I really liked is that even though there are a lot of different room sizes and it is a larger property, it was still quiet and peaceful.

Amenities at Grand Caribe

  • Dock – There is a dock on-site for easy transfers to excursions and San Pedro.
  • Restaurants – Grand Caribe has two restaurants on-site, Rain and Aqua. Rain is a rooftop restaurant and bar. It is the perfect setting for a romantic sunset dinner or drink to end the evening. They have great food! Aqua is an Asian influenced restaurant. We didn’t get to try it but they do have sushi nights! There are also plenty of restaurants within golf cart driving distance of Grand Caribe. Make sure to definitely check out Stella’s Sunset Wine Bar and Restaurant for half off bottles of wine during happy hour!
  • Spa
  • Grocery Store – One very convenient piece of Grand Caribe is the onsite grocery store. Before your trip, you can have them stock your fridge with all the food you want, or you can walk down and pick up what you want throughout your vacation. The prices are very reasonable, too.
  • Golf Cart Rentals
  • Water Sports Rentals
  • Gym on site. It is small but has all the necessities, like weights, machines, treadmill, elliptical and bikes.
  • Beach
  • Freshwater Pools – There are 6 freshwater pools onsite.

Travel Tips for Belize

  • Make sure to bring bug spray! The mosquitos are vicious in the very early morning and at dusk.
  • Get a golf cart rental when staying on one of the islands. That is their main mode of transportation.
  • Bring USD. They widely accept the USD and the exchange rate is very easy. 2:1 (2 Belizian Dollars for 1 USD)

Are All-Inclusive Resorts Worth It?

Are All-Inclusive Resorts Worth It?

One of the most common questions I get as a travel agent is: are all-inclusive resorts worth it? Like a lot of things in life, there isn’t a simple yes or no answer. Yes, sometimes all-inclusive resorts are worth it and no, sometimes all-inclusive resorts are not worth it. It really all depends on the type of vacation you are hoping to go on. I thought I would layout certain times when an all-inclusive resort may be a good fit for your vacation.

Are All-Inclusive Resorts Worth It?
Are All-Inclusive Resorts Worth It?
Are All-Inclusive Resorts Worth It?

Here are six times when all-inclusive resorts are worth it for your next vacation:

1. You want good food and drink all day long and whenever you want.

At an all-inclusive resort, you can enjoy food and drinks 24-hours a day in a restaurant, at a swim-up bar, pool-side, and beach-side. Some resorts also include room service in their all-inclusive price. If you want to getaway and not have to worry about paying for every meal or drink, an all-inclusive resort would be a great fit.

Room Service at UNICO Riviera Maya - all-inclusive resorts are worth it

2. You want to know exactly what you are spending.

One benefit of an all-inclusive resort is you pay for your room, meals, and drinks all upfront, so you know exactly what you will be spending on your vacation. If it is important to stay on budget, an all-inclusive resort is a really great option. You will be able to sit back and enjoy your trip without having to worry about counting every penny because everything is paid before you get there. The only thing you would have to consider is any extra excursions, spa treatments or souvenirs you want to bring home.

3. You want to relax with a drink in your hand.

If you are needing a vacation to relax and unwind, go with an all-inclusive resort. You can spend every day sitting poolside or on the beach with a drink in your hand without a care in the world. All-inclusive resorts are perfect for a relaxing vacation.

4. You are honeymooners.

Planning your wedding is stressful enough, your honeymoon shouldn’t be stressful, too. If you are newlyweds, an all-inclusive resort can be a perfect option. It is a vacation where you can go and relax after all the wedding hype and finally be together just the two of you. It is a really great way to kick-off a new marriage.

5. You are going with a big group.

If you are going on a family vacation, a bachelorette party, or a big group of friends, it can be really hard to find a place that everyone will enjoy and will fit everyone’s budget. All-inclusive resorts are great options for traveling with a big group. There are all-inclusive resorts that have family-friendly sides along with adult-only sections. There is something for everyone at every age in the family. If you are going with a big group of friends, all-inclusives are great for every budget and have plenty of things to do so everyone can have fun. ANd it is easier for having everyone in one place.

6. You want some activities and excursions but don’t want to have to plan.

Another great thing about all-inclusive resorts are their activities on-site and their concierge that coordinates excursions off-site. If you want to go on a vacation where you have unlimited options of things to do, an all-inclusive resort is a great option. The resort is always hosting activities throughout the day and night on-site, like fitness classes, art classes, and shows. You can also go on excursions off-site that the resort will coordinate for you. It makes vacationing very easy!

Top 3 Ways to Easily Pick Your Next Travel Destination

Top 3 Ways to Easily Pick Your Next Travel Destination

Are you like me and find it difficult to pick your next travel destination? There are so many wonderful places on this earth and they are all high on my travel bucket list. How do you pick just one?! So I had to come up with some ideas on how to make this decision process easier because I could spend forever trying to pick the next vacation spot. Here is the list for you!

Top 3 Ways to Easily Pick Your Next Travel Destination
Top 3 Ways to Easily Pick Your Next Travel Destination
Top 3 Ways to Easily Pick Your Next Travel Destination

When you can’t decide where to go, here are three ways to easily pick your next travel destination.

1. Follow the Flight Deals

Airlines are always having flight deals. Just this past week Qantas was celebrating their 100th birthday and was giving away $100 flights to Australia. Over Black Friday weekend every year, I have found some of the best flight deals. I got to Paris and back from London on a nonstop flight for under $500. I got two roundtrip tickets to Maui for under $500. Pretty much everyday Frontier is basically giving away free flights to random small towns in the US. If you are flexible on when you fly and where you fly, you can find flight deals year-round, but especially on Black Friday weekend. If you just follow the flight deals, the airlines will easily pick your next travel destination for you!

2. Go Where Your Budget Allows

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it can really help narrow down vacation options. If you are really needing a vacation ASAP, but have a lower budget, you will most likely find options that aren’t more than a half-day flight away. If you have been saving up and have a bigger budget, you can choose a destination farther away. Set a budget and stay intent on keeping to that budget. Then you can easily narrow down your options for your next travel destination.

3. Strategically Pick A Location Based on Your PTO

If you work full time in a corporate setting, that most likely means you have limited paid time off. It’s important to use that time off wisely! When I worked in a corporate setting, I chose to take a lot of long weekend vacations over one big vacation a year. For you, one big vacation may be the perfect fit. For me, I needed to be traveling as much as possible, so multiple long weekend trips were perfect. Depending on your vacationing style, picking a location based on the PTO you have can be helpful. If you need to have a lot of vacations on your calendar each year, choose destinations throughout the US that you can easily visit on a long weekend, like Seattle, Savannah, and Denver. If you like to look forward to a long extended getaway once a year, save up your PTO and find that destination that will get you far, far away from home!

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Ambergris Caye

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Ambergris Caye

A lot goes into my decision on where to travel. There are only so many days in a year and dollars in the bank account, so when Belize popped onto my radar, I did a lot of research to see if it would be worthy of a visit.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Ambergris Caye

Belize is still a relatively hidden gem. I have been hearing about more people visiting or wanting to visit, but it definitely hasn’t become as popular a travel destination like Costa Rica or Mexico.

After visiting this past October, I have realized that Belize should be on everyone’s travel list, especially if you are a couple that enjoys tropical heaven with plenty of adventure opportunities.

If you are thinking about traveling to Belize and staying on Ambergris Caye or planning to in the near future, here are all my thoughts and tips in a guide to visiting Ambergris Caye.

Picking a Spot to Visit in Belize

There are many places to pick from when deciding where to stay when visiting Belize. You can go with a beautiful island like Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker to coastal havens like Placencia to a jungle retreat like Belmopan. With so many options, it can be hard to pick one spot. I am a beach girl through and through, so I knew I wanted to be on the coast or stay on an island. I heard a lot of great things about Ambergris Caye, so I decided that is where I would stay when visiting Belize.

Where is Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is located on the northeast part of Belize. It is actually so close to Mexico that it looks like you could just hop over the little river dividing Ambergris Caye from Xcalak, Mexico!

Airplane ride from Belize City to Ambergris Caye

How to Get to Ambergris Caye

There are two main ways to get to Ambergris Caye from the mainland of Belize. I chose to take the 15-minute plane ride from Belize City to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. It is a beautiful ride flying over the crystal clear blue waters and coral reefs. There are two main airlines that fly to and from the island every hour, Maya Island Air and Tropic Air.

The other option is to take the water taxi. This boat ride takes about 75 minutes.

The taxi option is more affordable than the air option, but I highly recommend taking the air route at least once for the views and the experience of flying in a 14 seater plane!

What to Pack When Traveling to Belize

I learned about some key packing items not to forget after traveling to Belize. Do not forget to pack these items when visiting Ambergris Caye!

  • Bug Spray. The bugs do not mess around in Belize. Mosquitos will eat you alive, especially in the jungle. But even if you are staying on an island like Ambergris Caye near the water, dusk and nightfall still brings out the mosquitos. Do NOT forget bug spray!
  • Sunscreen. Like any tropical destination, do not forget sunscreen!
  • Light and Airy Clothes. Belize is hot and humid day and night. The less clothes you wear and the lighter weight they are, the better.
  • Swimsuits. You’re in a tropical paradise with amazing beautiful blue water. Bring all the swimsuits!
  • Water Shoes or Hiking Shoes. A lot of the mainland excursions include some hiking and wading through streams or cave floating. Having proper shoes will go a long way if you plan on doing some excursions.
  • Go Pro. If you are a snorkeler or diver, do not forget your underwater camera. Belize has the best snorkeling I have ever done. The reef is the healthiest in the world and the amount of underwater life you see is unreal!

Where to Stay on Ambergris Caye

There are many accommodations to choose from when visiting Ambergris Caye. When I visited, I knew I wanted a small kitchen option to be able to make breakfasts and lunches and not have to eat out all the time. I chose Grand Caribe. This resort has more of a condo feel with full kitchens in their rooms. There is a large variety of room types from studio space to 5-bedrooms. There are six pools, a swim-up bar, plenty of water activities, grocery store on-site, and a dock. It is a great resort for families and couples!

Where to Eat on Ambergris Caye

There are a lot of really good places to eat on Ambergris Caye. If you want delicious food at restaurants where the locals eat, stay off the beachfront areas. Most of the authentic, local cuisine is found in the heart of San Pedro away from the tourist spots.

Here are three of my favorite restaurants on Ambergris Caye.

1. Neri’s Tacos

One of the locals recommended Neri’s Tacos to us for breakfast. It is located in San Pedro and is basically a hole in the wall shack. It was the best breakfast we had on the island! And it was cheap. We got a burrito, 5 tacos, two freshly squeezed watermelon juices, and a veggie fry jack all for $10 USD. I highly recommend stopping here at least once during your visit to Ambergris Caye for some delicious authentic Belizean food!

2. Stella’s Sunset Wine Bar & Restaurant

This restaurant is very close to Grand Caribe and was our first dinner stop. We loved it so much we went back a second time. It is located on the western side of the island and has amazing sunsets. They have half-off bottles of wine during happy hour and live music on Fridays. Besides the bugs (remember bug spray! If you don’t, they have some you can use.), this was the perfect evening spot to hang out, drink some good wine, eat great food and relax.

3. The Hungry Grouper

The Hungry Group was another recommendation from a local. It is located in San Pedro. I’m pretty sure the chef is the guy who runs the place and takes your order. Very small place (maybe 5 tables) and a very cozy vibe. The menu is extensive, but we asked for the owner’s recommendation and he whipped us up his best ideas for that day. Very personalized service and delicious food.

What to Do on Ambergris Caye

There are many things to do while on Ambergris Caye, including all the beach and water activities to exploring beautiful local art. Here are some of my favorite things to do on Ambergris Caye:

  • Relax on the beach or by the pool.
Pool at Grand Caribe Resort in belize
  • Shop in San Pedro.
Belize Chocolate Company Boutique on Ambergris Caye
  • Tour Art Galleries.
  • Visit Secret Beach. (Not so secret anymore… If you want a party vibe and have a few drinks while cooling down in the ocean, check out Secret Beach.)
Blue Bayou at Secret Beach
  • Scuba the Famous Blue Hole
We snorkeled Blue Hole. It was fun but scuba diving would have been way better. On the way back from Blue Hole, we snorkeled Half Moon Caye, which was amazing! And we stopped for lunch on the island. This portion made the 4 hour round trip boat ride worth it. If you get motion or seasick, I wouldn’t recommend this activity.
Palm tree lined coast Half Moon Caye
  • Snorkel Hol Chan, Shark Alley, and Mexico Rocks
I snorkeled Mexico Rocks and it was THE best snorkeling I have ever done. While snorkeling, I saw stingrays, eagle rays, starfish, pufferfish, lobsters, sharks, lionfish and so much more! If you could only choose one location to snorkel, I would highly recommend snorkeling Mexico Rocks.
  • Visit the Mayan Ruins on the Mainland – Lamanai Mayan Ruins
I toured the Lamanai Mayan Ruins. There are plenty to choose from but this one included an hour boat ride to the Lamanai Mayan Ruins. I saw manatees, birds, iguana and a lot of wildlife. It was so calm and peaceful. A great start to the Lamanai Mayan Ruins.

Belize is a beautiful and fun country. The locals are so kind and I felt safe the entire time I was there. I was really glad I stayed on Ambergris Caye! Make sure to add Belize and Ambergris Caye to your travel list, you won’t regret it. You better Belize it!

River cruising is a great way to experience multiple cities in Europe all in one vacation. Most river cruise lines now have wine inspired itineraries perfect for wine lovers. One of my favorite river cruise lines AmaWaterways has so many wine cruises to choose from, including in countries like France, Spain, Portugal, and so many more.

Each cruise line includes different amenities on wine vacations. AmaWaterways wine cruises include a wine expert, wine tastings, winery tours, private cellar tours, gourmet food, and excursions. 3. Porto, Portugal for Port Wine Tastings

Portugal is known for its delicious Port wine. This wine comes from the northern region of Portugal in the Douro Valley. If you love wine on the sweeter side, taking a tour of this region in Portugal would be a great option. There are many types of wine tours to take. Depending on the length of time you have and the amount of time you want to spend tasting wine, you can do a 7-day private tour of Porto and Douro, take a Douro River cruise, or take Port Wine Cellar tours. The options are endless! Make sure to set some time aside to walk around Porto. It is a beautiful coastal town with colorful buildings, old-age bridges, and cobblestone streets.

4. Bike Tour in Mendoza, Argentina

For those wine lovers that also love fitness, a bike tour in Mendoza, Argentina would be a perfect wine-inspired vacation. You can take a self-guided bike tour or an escorted tour. There are different wine regions and tour companies throughout Mendoza, which gives you a lot of different bike tour options. Choose a set tour or build a customized route for your group!
